Big epic films often build hype slowly, and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is doing exactly that. The movie has been in development for a while and has already become one of the most talked-about upcoming releases in Hollywood. With a huge cast and a story based on ancient mythology, it has drawn attention from both film fans and general audiences.

The project brings together a long list of well-known actors and places them in a modern, large-scale retelling of a classic Greek story. Early marketing has focused on the journey of Odysseus and the world he moves through after the Trojan War. Now, a new TV spot has added even more excitement by giving fans a closer look at one of the film’s key characters.

In the latest promotional clip, Zendaya appears as Athena for the first time. Athena is known in Greek mythology as the goddess of wisdom and war, and she plays an important role in guiding Odysseus on his long journey home. In the brief shot shown in the TV spot, she appears alongside Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus, suggesting her character will be closely involved in his path and decisions.

The film itself is written and directed by Christopher Nolan and is based on Homer’s ancient epic poem The Odyssey. It follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. His journey is long and dangerous, filled with challenges that test his strength, patience, and intelligence, while he tries to reunite with his wife, Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway.

The cast is large and includes many major names such as Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and others. Production is handled by Nolan and Emma Thomas through their company Syncopy, with Universal Pictures distributing the film.

Nolan reportedly began writing the screenplay in 2024 and moved quickly to secure the project with Universal later that year. Casting continued into early 2025, with filming taking place across multiple countries including Greece, Morocco, Italy, Iceland, and Scotland. The production is also notable for being shot using IMAX 70mm cameras, making it one of Nolan’s most technically ambitious films to date.

With its large-scale production and mythological story, The Odyssey is shaping up to be one of the biggest cinematic releases of the year. Zendaya’s first appearance as Athena adds another layer of anticipation as audiences wait to see how Nolan brings the ancient world to life on screen.
