First Look: Tom Rhys Harries Transforms into Matt Hagen for DCU’s ‘Clayface’

Thanks to recent set leaks, fans now have their first look at Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen in the upcoming DC film Clayface.

The photos reveal Harries in partial transformation as the titular character, giving audiences a glimpse at the body horror-inspired take on the classic villain.

The film is directed by James Watkins, with a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. It will be the third film in the DC Universe (DCU).

Tom Rhys Harries stars as Clayface, while Naomi Ackie plays a scientist who helps him after his face is disfigured. The story follows an actor who is attacked by a gangster and turns to Ackie’s character for help.

The film is produced by DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran, alongside Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. Flanagan had originally expressed interest in making a Clayface horror movie and pitched the idea to DC Films in March 2023. In December 2024, DC Studios officially greenlit the project.

However, Flanagan could not direct due to scheduling conflicts, so Watkins took over the role in February 2025. Amini began rewriting the script in May, and Harries was cast in June, with additional casting completed in the following months.

Filming began on August 31, 2025, in Liverpool, England, under the working title Corinthians. According to sources, location shoots have included Derby Square and the former Merseyside Police headquarters, which is being used to store Gotham-themed vehicles.

The Law Courts building doubled as Gotham Hospital for some scenes. Soundstage work is being done at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Rob Hardy, who previously worked on the DCU film Supergirl (2026), is serving as cinematographer.

Clayface is set to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on September 11, 2026. It will be part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
