First Official Look at Milly Alcock’s Supergirl Revealed – Expect a Darker Hero Than Superman
Superman has been leading the way for DCU movies, but soon it’ll be his cousin’s time to shine. Fans just got their first official look at Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and according to the new poster and James Gunn himself, she will be something very different.
James Gunn, the director of the upcoming Superman film and head of DC Studios, shared the first image of Alcock as Supergirl on Instagram. The post simply said “Look Out. 2026” as a teaser for her movie’s release date.
Alcock’s version of Supergirl debuted at the end of the Superman movie, where she appeared briefly to hint at the next story in DC’s new movie universe.

Gunn previously explained that fans shouldn’t expect a character like Superman. “She’s a mess. She’s a total mess,” Gunn said. “I mean, I think as we learn, she’s had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background. He’s had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she’s ended up different than her cousin.”
The Supergirl movie is based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El and is being made by DC Studios. Warner Bros. will handle the release.
The film is directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira. Milly Alcock, who people know from her role in “House of the Dragon,” stars as Kara. Joining her are Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham. In the movie, Supergirl and her dog Krypto will travel across space as she sets out on what is described as a “murderous quest for revenge.”
The film has been in the works for years. Back in 2018, a Supergirl movie was planned as part of the old DC movie universe. Sasha Calle played Supergirl in “The Flash” movie in 2023, but when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in 2022, they changed plans. In January 2023, the new film was announced with the title “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” based on a comic book of the same name.
By November 2023, Ana Nogueira was hired to write the script. Alcock got the lead role in January 2024 and first appeared in the Superman movie planned for 2025. Director Craig Gillespie joined the project in May 2024. Filming happened between January and May 2025 in England and Scotland. The movie later dropped the “Woman of Tomorrow” subtitle in June 2025.
Supergirl is set to release in theaters on June 26, 2026. It will be part of the DC Universe’s first chapter, called Gods and Monsters.
In the movie’s story, Kara is celebrating her 21st birthday when she sets off across space with her dog Krypto. Along the way, she meets a young girl named Ruthye and begins her dangerous journey for revenge. Her character is different from Superman, as she grew up watching everyone around her die when Krypton exploded. This made her much tougher and colder than her cousin. James Gunn described her as “pixie-ish, but very attitudinal.”
The movie also stars Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills. Eve Ridley plays Ruthye, the young girl Kara meets. David Krumholtz plays Kara’s father Zor-El, and Emily Beecham plays her mother Alura. Jason Momoa is expected to appear as Lobo, a space bounty hunter. Fans will also see Krypto, the super-powered dog, who was first introduced in the Superman movie.
With its darker tone and new story, Supergirl’s movie promises a very different ride compared to Superman’s. Fans can expect to see more as the 2026 release date gets closer.
