First Official Synopsis for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Revealed
Marvel fans finally have a first look at the story for the next big Avengers movie. Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, and it promises to bring together heroes from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The film will mark the fifth Avengers installment following Avengers: Endgame (2019) and is part of Phase Six of the MCU.
The Russo brothers, Anthony and Joe, are returning as directors, with Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely handling the screenplay. Marvel Studios and AGBO are producing the film, and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute it.
The cast is huge, featuring Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr.
In Avengers: Doomsday, the Avengers will team up with the Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers, and the X-Men to face Doctor Doom, who will serve as the film’s main villain.
Disney revealed the first synopsis at the Disney Expo in China, stating: “Doctor Doom has officially arrived in the MCU. This villain, a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic, will unleash a cascading crisis across the entire multiverse.”

The project has seen some changes since the announcement of the next Avengers films. Originally, The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars were planned to conclude the MCU’s Phase Six, with Destin Daniel Cretton set to direct The Kang Dynasty.
Jonathan Majors was also going to reprise his role as Kang the Conqueror, but legal issues led to his firing, and Marvel adjusted the storyline. In July 2024, Marvel confirmed the Russos’ return, Robert Downey Jr.’s casting as Doctor Doom, and the new subtitle Doomsday. Filming began in April at Pinewood Studios in England, with additional scenes shot in England and Bahrain.
Avengers: Doomsday is positioned to be one of the biggest MCU events yet, bringing together a massive cast and connecting multiple storylines across the Marvel universe. Its sequel, Secret Wars, is planned for December 17, 2027.
