The series brings Hal Jordan and John Stewart back into live-action. According to information from DC Studios, the story focuses on the two Lanterns working together on a murder case in the U.S., which eventually leads them into a much larger mystery. Hal is played by Kyle Chandler, while Aaron Pierre takes on the role of John Stewart. Kelly Macdonald and Nathan Fillion are also part of the cast.
The project has been in development for years. Earlier attempts started under producer Greg Berlanti, but the direction shifted after Gunn and Safran took charge of DC Studios in 2022. Their plan pushed the show toward a darker, grounded tone.
DC sources have said the creative team drew inspiration from crime dramas like True Detective and Slow Horses, aiming for a mix of superhero action and investigative storytelling.
The series was created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, with Mundy leading the production as showrunner. HBO ordered the show in 2024, and filming began the following year. Production took place around Los Angeles with several directors, including James Hawes, Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov.
Lanterns is set to arrive in mid-2026 and will run for eight episodes as part of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
