Florence Pugh Brings Dark Glamour to the ‘East of Eden’ BAFTA Screening

Florence Pugh has spent the past few weeks turning her promotional tour for Netflix’s newest limited series into something of a fashion event in its own right, using each stop to reflect the tone of the project she’s selling. That approach reached a new peak this week as she prepared for the show’s official UK debut.

‘East of Eden,’ Netflix’s seven-episode adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, has been building anticipation for months as one of the streamer’s more literary awards-season bets. With the series just days from its global release, the promotional push has increasingly shifted toward London, where the show’s cast and creative team gathered for a milestone screening.

That milestone arrived Friday, September 25, when Pugh stepped out for a special screening of ‘East of Eden’ hosted by BAFTA in London. For the event, she wore a dramatic black ruffled Rodarte gown paired with Bvlgari jewelry, a stark tonal shift from the softer look she’d worn earlier in the day.

Speaking to the Press Association at the screening, Pugh described the experience of making the show as a genuinely beautiful one, despite how complicated and layered her character turned out to be.

The gown itself, from Rodarte’s Fall 2026 collection, carried its own thematic weight. The collection drew inspiration from Dario Argento’s 1977 supernatural horror film ‘Suspiria,’ meaning dark romantic imagery was already baked into its design before Pugh ever put it on.

That aesthetic choice tracked closely with the character she plays in the series. Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, a deeply manipulative figure who rejects the era’s expectations of women by abandoning her role as wife and mother to instead work in a brothel, a stark departure from the more grounded parts of Steinbeck’s original novel that focus on the Trask and Hamilton families.

Joining Pugh at the BAFTA screening were co-star Mike Faist and Zoe Kazan, who serves as the series’ writer, co-showrunner and executive producer. Earlier that same day, Pugh had also stopped by BBC Studios wearing a green striped Vivienne Westwood button-up paired with high-waisted pinstripe trousers, part of a broader day of press appearances tied to the London leg of the rollout.

‘East of Eden’ reimagines Steinbeck’s multigenerational saga through the lens of Cathy Ames, exploring themes of identity, inheritance and the choice between good and evil that made the original novel a landmark of American literature. The series is directed by Garth Davis and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, with a cast that also includes Christopher Abbott, Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders.

Pugh isn’t just starring in the project; she also serves as an executive producer, giving her a hand in shaping the adaptation beyond her on-screen performance. The series has reportedly been in development since 2020, making this London premiere a significant milestone in a project that’s taken years to reach the screen.

All seven episodes of ‘East of Eden’ are set to premiere globally on Netflix on October 1, capping off a promotional run that’s spanned events in both Los Angeles and London. Given the strength of the source material and the caliber of talent involved, the series looks positioned to be one of the streamer’s more prestige-driven releases this fall.
