Florence Pugh Whispers Her Way Into ‘East of Eden’ Hype With Netflix’s Unexpected ASMR Promo

John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel ‘East of Eden‘ is not exactly known for being relaxing. It is a sprawling saga about good, evil and family, set in California’s Salinas Valley from the Civil War to the end of World War I. Netflix has spent years developing its new limited series, which was first linked to Florence Pugh in 2022.

That makes the latest bit of promotion feel like a delightful tonal swerve. The seven-episode series was written by Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather Elia Kazan directed the 1955 film with James Dean. It puts Pugh at the center as the antihero Cathy Ames.

With the premiere days away, Netflix has found an unusual way to remind fans. On Monday, the streamer posted a video titled “FLORENCE PUGH ASMR,” along with a reminder that ‘East of Eden’ premieres Oct. 1. The clip has already drawn 148K views.

In the video Netflix shared, Pugh sits in a cozy, book-lined study in a dark top with lace detailing. A vintage-style microphone stands in front of her, a green banker’s lamp glows behind her, and she holds a small notebook and a pencil. A “Ha ha” caption sits over the moment, hinting that the mood is more playful than solemn.

Netflix Canada has described it as an ASMR reading of ‘East of Eden’ that is “everything,” positioning it as a companion to the series adaptation. The clip runs 5 minutes and 54 seconds, which is long for a promo and suggests Netflix expects fans to settle in.

The stunt works because the series has been built around voice. The trailer opens with narration from Pugh’s Cathy about monsters being born to human parents, a sentiment taken directly from the opening of chapter 8 in Steinbeck’s novel. Netflix’s own Tudum coverage describes the series as ‘East of Eden’ from the perspective of its most famous monster.

Turning that intimate, deliberate delivery into an ASMR experience is a natural extension. It also reaches viewers who might never open a Steinbeck novel.

The story follows the Trask family across generations, with Cathy Ames arriving bloodied at the home of brothers Adam and Charles Trask and disrupting their bond. Christopher Abbott plays Adam and Mike Faist plays Charles, and their father Cyrus is played by Tracy Letts.

The cast also includes Hoon Lee as Lee, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Joseph Zada as Cal and Joe Anders as Aron. Garth Davis directed episodes 1 through 4, and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed episodes 5 through 7. The series was filmed across multiple locations in New Zealand.

Kazan has said she wanted to keep the series grounded in Steinbeck’s writing. She told Netflix Tudum that it was important to “stay rooted in the text of the book” when exploring who Cathy is. That includes using Steinbeck’s own journals as a resource for understanding his intent.

Pugh, who also serves as an executive producer, has described the role as one of the most complex female characters in literature. She has also said Cathy is the engine of this version of the story.

Early signals point to serious ambitions. Gold Derby has suggested the scale of the series will make it a contender at the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards warm-up laps that precede the 2027 Emmy race. The show also had its UK premiere at BAFTA HQ in London earlier this week.
