‘Furious’ Episode 5 Recap: How Catherine’s Kidnapping Plot Sends the Investigation Spiraling

‘Furious‘ has spent its first four episodes steadily tightening the psychological rope between FBI agent Alice Black and the calculating serial killer she’s chasing, and episode five pushes that dynamic to a genuinely dangerous new level. Hulu’s crime thriller, created by Elizabeth Meriwether and led by Emmy Rossum, has built its tension around two women circling the same violent history from opposite sides of the law.

The previous episode revealed just how deeply Alice’s own trauma has been fueling her increasingly reckless behavior as she and her partner Danny uncover new connections between Isabel, Catherine, and a murdered trafficker named Adrian Murado. That episode also saw Catherine kidnap Hal, the Easton family’s lawyer, in a desperate bid to get answers about Isabel’s death, while Alice discovered that her supervisor Nora and former colleague Ed George had both been quietly involved in the original investigation before Nora abruptly pulled her off the case.

Episode five, titled “Pick a Sticker,” picks up directly from that kidnapping. After abducting Hal, Catherine brings him to the home of Alden Drummings, a wheelchair-bound figure tied to the broader conspiracy Alice has been unraveling. What follows escalates quickly, and by the episode’s end, Hal is dead, with Alden left alive and seemingly ready to take the blame for what happened inside his own house.

Back at the FBI, Hal’s death sends the office into chaos, with colleagues furious at Marshall for actions that Nora and Ed fear will only draw more unwanted attention to a cold case they’ve been working to keep buried. That institutional panic underscores just how much the show’s central mystery isn’t only about Catherine’s personal vendetta, but about a wider web of people actively trying to keep the truth from surfacing.

While the fallout from Hal’s death consumes the bureau, Alice continues investigating largely on her own initiative, refusing to let Nora’s earlier attempt to sideline her stop the momentum she’s built. She learns that Catherine was previously reported as the mysterious “woman in the picture” after another nurse at Alden’s home placed a 911 call, adding another concrete thread tying Catherine directly to the location.

Alice also digs deeper into Isabel’s pregnancy, developing a theory that the hospital bracelet found earlier may be connected to a Safe Surrender baby box. She shares that theory privately with Nora, sensing there’s a specific reason her supervisor has been keeping her at arm’s length from the case, even if she still doesn’t fully understand why.

The episode’s final moments deliver its most significant turn yet. Following her Safe Surrender theory, Alice travels to one of the designated locations to investigate further, only to come face-to-face in the waiting room with the very woman she’s been hunting: Catherine herself.

That direct encounter marks a major shift for the series, closing the distance between its two central figures after five episodes of near-misses and secondhand clues. With Danny and Choi also arriving at Alden’s house to discover the aftermath of Hal’s death elsewhere in the episode, “Pick a Sticker” leaves multiple storylines converging at once as the season heads into its final stretch.

With three episodes remaining before the season finale on August 31, ‘Furious’ appears to be accelerating toward a direct confrontation between Alice and Catherine that’s felt inevitable since the show’s opening moments. Now that the two women have finally crossed paths, the question becomes what happens next, and whether Alice fully understands what she’s walking into.
