Television has no shortage of cautionary tales about shows that stumble in their second season, losing the momentum a promising debut managed to build. Even series that eventually find their footing often see audiences shrink before word of mouth has a chance to catch up.

Adults‘ looked like it might be headed down a similarly rocky path after its rough May 2025 debut. The FX ensemble comedy follows five twenty-somethings, Samir, Billie, Paul Baker, Issa, and Anton, sharing a house in Bayside, Queens, navigating the messy, often humiliating process of figuring out adulthood together.

That uncertain start has now given way to genuine momentum. According to The Hollywood Reporter, streaming viewership for ‘Adults’ has grown 40% compared to the same window during season one, with the gains based on Disney’s internal streaming data tracking the show’s performance across Hulu and Disney+.

That growth has been especially pronounced overseas, where viewing outside the United States has doubled compared to the show’s first season. The figures cover the twelve days since the eight-episode second season debuted as a binge release on Hulu, while also airing two episodes per week on FXX, mirroring the release strategy used for season one on FX.

That audience growth lines up closely with a dramatic shift in critical reception. Where season one drew mixed reviews for straining to feel culturally relevant before its ensemble had fully gelled, season two has been met with a perfect 100% average Tomatometer score, alongside a strong 79 out of 100 on Metacritic.

Variety’s review captured that turnaround directly, noting that the show finally has its own momentum this time around, driven largely by a cast whose rapport no longer requires the show to lean on broad generational commentary to land. IndieWire and The A.V. Club offered similarly positive assessments, both crediting co-creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw with leaning into the ensemble’s strongest dynamics rather than repeating the missteps of the first season.

A prequel episode, “Marathon Day,” released July 31 ahead of the new season, also appears to have helped build anticipation heading into the premiere, giving longtime viewers additional context around how the group first came together. That episode centered on Paul Baker, a Canadian roommate whose expiring visa led to a marriage of convenience with Anton in the season one finale, setting up a love triangle involving Anton, Paul Baker, and Issa that carries directly into the new season.

Produced by FX Productions, with Kronengold and Shaw serving as showrunners alongside executive producers Nick Kroll, Sarah Naftalis, Jonathan Krisel, Alicia Van Couvering, and Rob Rosell, ‘Adults’ has managed something genuinely difficult for a young ensemble comedy: turning a shaky first impression into a full-blown creative and commercial rebound. With both reviews and viewership numbers trending sharply upward, the show looks well positioned heading into whatever comes next.

For a series that could easily have faded after an uneven debut, ‘Adults’ now stands as a genuine example of a show using its sophomore season to prove its doubters wrong rather than confirm their concerns.

That kind of turnaround is especially notable in a streaming landscape where second seasons often struggle to hold onto whatever audience a show’s debut managed to attract. With international viewing numbers doubling and domestic streaming climbing 40% over the same stretch last year, ‘Adults’ has positioned itself as one of the more encouraging renewal stories of the current TV season, a reminder that a rocky start doesn’t always have to be the final word on a show’s future.
