‘Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest’ Movie Officially Confirmed, Here’s Everything We Know

Westeros has spent years expanding well beyond the borders of its original HBO series, colonizing prequels, spinoffs, and companion shows across the streaming landscape. Every new addition to that universe has found an eager audience, but one particular corner of Targaryen history has remained conspicuously untouched by any adaptation, at least until now.

That gap is finally closing. Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed ‘Aegon’s Conquest‘ as a theatrical ‘Game of Thrones’ film, set to release sometime after 2027, marking the franchise’s first-ever big-screen venture into George R.R. Martin’s sprawling fantasy world.

The confirmation arrives as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s broader slate announcement, which described the project as leveraging “iconic intellectual property” alongside other major upcoming releases like the next ‘Matrix’ installment, a new Batman film, and a live-action ‘Jetsons’ movie starring Jim Carrey. That placement alone signals just how seriously the studio is treating this particular expansion of the Thrones universe.

Beau Willimon, best known as the showrunner behind Netflix’s ‘House of Cards’ and a writer on Disney+’s ‘Andor,’ has been attached to write the screenplay since the project was first reported. According to earlier coverage from Page Six Hollywood, Willimon had already submitted a completed draft of the script by March 2026, a version reportedly strong enough to help push the film onto Warner Bros.’ official slate.

The film centers on Aegon I Targaryen, known throughout Westeros history as Aegon the Conqueror, and his campaign to unite the Seven Kingdoms alongside his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys. That conquest took place roughly 300 years before the events of the original ‘Game of Thrones’ series, giving the film plenty of room to explore the earliest origins of the Iron Throne without stepping on any existing storylines.

Warner Bros. first teased the project’s title during its CinemaCon presentation back in April, where the studio confirmed ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ as part of its “2027 and beyond” slate. That reveal followed years of behind-the-scenes discussion, with HBO having explored the idea of an Aegon-centered prequel as far back as 2023, at one point considering a companion television series that could run alongside a feature film bridge.

Industry reporting has described the project internally as being eyed as “a mammoth, Dune-sized feature film,” reflecting the scale ambitions behind bringing a full continental conquest to the big screen rather than confining it to television. Some outlets have also floated screenwriter Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on ‘The Batman,’ as potentially involved in the project, though he has not been officially attached alongside Willimon.

No casting details have been revealed yet for any of the film’s central roles, including Aegon, Visenya, or Rhaenys themselves. With the project still years away from release and Warner Bros.’ ownership situation remaining somewhat uncertain amid ongoing speculation about a possible Paramount Skydance acquisition, further concrete details will likely take time to materialize.

For a franchise that’s already proven its appetite for prequels through ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ bringing the Targaryen dynasty’s founding story to theaters feels like a natural next step. Whether ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ can translate that same sprawling political intrigue to the big screen remains one of the more intriguing open questions in the franchise’s future.
