Prime Video’s flagship Middle-earth series has spent its first two seasons slowly building toward one of the most anticipated character reveals in the entire franchise. Fans have watched Daniel Weyman’s mysterious Stranger stumble through the wilderness for years, piecing together clues about his true identity long before the show itself confirmed what most viewers already suspected.

That patience is finally paying off in a big way as Season 3 approaches. With the show gearing up for its next chapter, Amazon has begun rolling out a wave of exclusive imagery designed to remind fans just how much has changed since the Stranger first crash-landed in Middle-earth.

Empire magazine has now unveiled the first official look at Gandalf the Grey’s full transformation for Season 3, complete with his iconic wide-brimmed grey hat, weathered staff, and unmistakable beard. It marks the character’s first true live-action appearance in his classic wizard attire, following two seasons of the Stranger slowly discovering who he really is.

The reveal carries extra weight given the showrunners’ involvement in shaping this new look. According to comments Weyman gave to Empire, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay told him it was finally time for Gandalf to arrive as the wizard fans have always known from Tolkien’s writing.

Weyman described the shift as unlocking a completely new side of the character that longtime fans should immediately recognize. He explained to the outlet that stepping into the role allowed him to tap into a more mischievous, twinkling energy befitting the Gandalf readers have loved for decades.

The actor also opened up about the emotional weight of finally putting on the character’s complete costume for the first time. He called the experience of wearing Gandalf’s hat unbelievably spine tingling, admitting he found himself pinching himself throughout filming just to process the moment.

This marks Gandalf’s first live-action appearance in any form since Ian McKellen last played the character in 2014’s ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,’ making Weyman’s full transformation an especially significant milestone for the franchise. The timing lines up with Season 3’s story, which reportedly features a substantial time jump landing at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron.

Gandalf is not the only major character receiving a dramatic visual overhaul heading into the new season. Empire also revealed a first look at Charlie Vickers’ Sauron in his complete, iconic dark armor and crown, marking a stark shift from his previous disguises as Halbrand and Annatar across the show’s first two seasons.

The full feature, including additional interviews with cast members like Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel and Robert Aramayo’s Elrond, is set to appear in Empire’s newest issue, which hits newsstands on July 30. The magazine’s team reportedly spent several days on set at Shepperton Studios gathering material for the story, touring recreations of Khazad-dûm, Rivendell, Númenor, and Mordor along the way.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Season 3 is set to premiere on November 11, continuing the prequel series’ run since its 2022 debut. With Season 4 already confirmed for a future release, this latest wave of imagery suggests Amazon is ready to fully lean into the show’s most iconic characters as the story barrels toward its larger confrontation between good and evil.
