Anthony Geary, best known for playing Luke Spencer on General Hospital, has died at the age of 78. His death was confirmed by TMZ, citing a family member. He passed away on Sunday while in Amsterdam.

Details about what caused his death are still limited. However, several reports say he died after complications linked to a scheduled surgery. No official medical statement has been released so far.

Geary was one of the most recognizable faces in daytime television. He spent decades on General Hospital and became a household name through the role of Luke Spencer. His on-screen pairing with Genie Francis turned into one of the most famous couples in soap opera history.

Their characters’ wedding episode in 1981 drew massive viewership and remains one of the most-watched moments in soap TV.

Throughout his career, Geary earned eight Daytime Emmy Awards, a record in the lead actor category. Beyond General Hospital, he appeared on several popular shows, including The Partridge Family, The Mod Squad, All in the Family, and The Young and the Restless.

Geary was born in Utah and raised in a Mormon household. He studied theater at the University of Utah before starting out on stage. He later moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s to pursue television and film work. His early TV appearances helped build a steady career before his breakout role on General Hospital.

Although he was strongly tied to soaps, Geary also worked in theater and film. He appeared in movies like UHF and Disorderlies and performed in many stage productions, including a one-man show that earned strong reviews. After leaving General Hospital in 2015, he mostly stepped away from acting, though he returned briefly for a cameo in 2017.
