George Clooney Reveals Which Stars Are Back for the New ‘Ocean’s’ Movie
George Clooney is bringing back the Ocean’s franchise with a new film, but this time with a twist. Instead of just reliving the past, the story will focus on the challenges of pulling off a heist when the crew is older.
Clooney was inspired by the movie Going in Style, a comedy about aging criminals, and wanted to explore how experience and cleverness can make up for lost youth.
The new Ocean’s movie will see Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, and Julia Roberts returning as the original gang.
Clooney said the story centers on how the characters adapt to their age while still planning a complex heist. “There was something about the idea that we’re too old to do what we used to do, but we’re still smart enough to know how to get away with something, that just appeals to me,” he said. “They’ve lost a step, and they need to find a way to work around their limitations.”
Plans are already underway, with the team scouting locations and shooting expected to begin next October. The film will be produced jointly by Warner Bros. Pictures and Clooney’s Smokehouse Pictures.
The project has been in discussion for years. A sequel to Ocean’s Thirteen was considered until the death of Bernie Mac. In 2021, Don Cheadle mentioned that director Steven Soderbergh had been developing a sequel, and Matt Damon also expressed interest.
By December 2023, Clooney confirmed that a script was completed and that he was involved. In 2024 and this year, there were reports about potential directors, including Edward Berger and David Leitch, with Damon and Casey Affleck also expected to return. Clooney later confirmed the budget is finalized and that Roberts and Cheadle will reprise their roles, along with other familiar characters from the series.
