George Miller is not done with Mad Max just yet. According to a report from Puck News, the filmmaker is planning a new entry in the long-running post-apocalyptic franchise, even after recent uncertainty surrounding the series’ future.

The Mad Max franchise began in 1979 and has grown into a decades-spanning action saga about survival in a ruined world. Created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy, the series has gone through multiple eras, starting with the original films starring Mel Gibson as Max Rockatansky and later continuing with Tom Hardy taking over the role in Mad Max: Fury Road.

The most recent chapter, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, served as a prequel focused on the character Imperator Furiosa. The film starred Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role alongside Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, and others. It was widely praised by critics and audiences, holding strong scores on Rotten Tomatoes, but it struggled at the box office compared to expectations.

Despite positive reviews, Furiosa earned around $174 million worldwide against a reported budget close to $168 million. That result is seen as a disappointment for a major studio release, especially in comparison to Fury Road, which was both a critical and commercial success.

In the new report from Puck News, Miller is said to have outlined plans for another Mad Max film following Furiosa. The report also mentions early discussions around a possible television series expansion of the franchise.

However, Warner Bros., the studio that has distributed all previous Mad Max films, has reportedly decided not to move forward with Miller’s latest proposals at this stage. That has opened the door for other studios to step in.

According to the same report, companies including Amazon, Universal, and Sony Pictures have shown interest in the franchise. There is also mention of a potential TV series being developed alongside any future film plans, although nothing has been officially confirmed.

The entire Mad Max franchise has grossed over $540 million worldwide across its five films. The most successful entry remains Mad Max: Fury Road, which earned more than $380 million globally and is widely considered the creative peak of the series. It also received strong critical acclaim and multiple award nominations.

The shifting studio interest reflects a broader change in how major franchises are handled, especially when recent box office results fall below expectations. While Warner Bros. appears cautious after Furiosa, other studios seem more open to continuing large-scale world-building projects.

At this stage, there is no confirmed production timeline for a new Mad Max film or the rumored TV series. However, Miller’s continued involvement suggests the franchise is still active creatively, even if its future on screen remains uncertain.

For now, the next chapter of Mad Max depends on which studio ultimately decides to take on the project and how the property moves forward after a mixed financial response to its latest installment.
