The post-apocalyptic saga continues as Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin return in the trailer for Greenland 2: Migration.

The sequel to the 2020 disaster film Greenland premiered its first footage on Thursday, September 25, showing Butler, 55, and Baccarin, 46, reprising their roles as John and Allison Garrity.

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Greenland 2: Migration follows the Garrity family five years after a comet struck Earth.

According to the official synopsis, the family must leave the safety of their bunker and “traverse a shattered world in search of a new home.” The story promises more intense survival challenges as the family navigates a dangerous and destroyed Europe.

Speaking to Collider in August, Baccarin described the shoot as “the hardest shoot of my life. Not the easiest, not the most fun. A really difficult experience. We were outside a lot. We shot in London and we shot in Iceland. It was physically draining, emotionally draining.” She added that the film also “has really wonderful things going for it, the story of this family that really is trying to survive, and I think that really works, and I think that’s why it got a sequel.”

Baccarin continued, “I am very curious to see it myself, because I feel like it was a blur of exhaustion and running and crying, and much like the first, really.”

The film also stars Roman Griffin Davis as Nathan Garrity, replacing Roger Dale Floyd, alongside Amber Rose Revah, Gordon Alexander, Peter Polycarpou, William Abadie, and Tommie Earl Jenkins. Greenland 2: Migration was written by Chris Sparling and Mitchell LaFortune.

The sequel’s production began in June 2021, with STX acquiring worldwide distribution rights for $75 million at the Cannes Film Festival that year. Despite some delays and financial issues, most of the original cast returned, and filming officially started on April 29, 2024, in Shinfield Studios and Alton in the United Kingdom, as well as Iceland. Filming wrapped in July 2024. Lionsgate later acquired U.S. distribution rights in May 2024.

Originally scheduled for a U.S. release on March 28, the film was postponed. Greenland 2: Migration is now set to hit theaters on January 9, 2026.

The trailer promises high-stakes survival and family drama, and the behind-the-scenes stories from Baccarin show just how physically and emotionally demanding the shoot was. It will be interesting to see how fans respond to the sequel and the new cast member. Are you excited to see Greenland 2: Migration when it comes out? Share your thoughts in the comments.
