German Cinema Listing Reveals New 'Avengers: Doomsday' Runtime, and It's Longer Than Expected

Marvel Studios has spent months quietly wrestling with just how long ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ should actually be, a challenge that comes with the territory when your cast list spans three separate cinematic universes. Fitting the Avengers, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four into a single coherent story was always going to require serious screen time, and reports throughout the film’s post-production have reflected that ongoing struggle.

Those reports have shifted considerably over the past few months, swinging between wildly different runtime estimates depending on which stage of editing the Russo brothers happened to be navigating at the time. Early rumors pointed toward an unwieldy three-and-a-half-hour cut, while more recent test screening reports suggested Marvel had managed to trim things down considerably.

Now a concrete data point has emerged directly from official retail listings. A German cinema chain has revealed that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will run for 170 minutes, or 2 hours and 50 minutes, according to listings posted by Cineplex theaters across multiple German cities. That figure lines up with cinema pages for locations in Euskirchen and Bayreuth, both confirming the same runtime alongside the film’s December 16 German release date.

That number represents a meaningful jump from the 165-minute runtime, or 2 hours and 45 minutes, that had circulated through earlier reporting following a test screening in September. It also splits the difference between two figures Marvel had reportedly been targeting throughout the editing process, landing closer to the higher end of what insiders previously described as the studio’s goal.

The path to this final figure has been anything but smooth. Reports from earlier this year described an early cut of the film running as long as 3 hours and 30 minutes, forcing Marvel’s editing team to make significant trims to reach something more theater-friendly. Director Anthony Russo had previously kept things deliberately vague when pressed on the subject, telling Collider at San Diego Comic-Con only that “it’s too early to say what the running time is. But it’s substantial.”

That substantial length ultimately still falls short of the MCU’s current runtime champion. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ remains the longest theatrical release in franchise history at approximately 181 minutes, meaning ‘Doomsday’ will come in roughly 11 minutes shorter even with its newly confirmed 170-minute length.

Placed alongside the franchise’s other entries, ‘Doomsday’ now sits comfortably as the second-longest Avengers film ever made, surpassing ‘Avengers: Infinity War’s’ 149-minute runtime by a significant margin. That places it well ahead of the original ‘The Avengers’ at 143 minutes and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ at 141 minutes, reflecting just how much larger in scope this crossover has become compared to the franchise’s earlier team-up films.

Given the sheer size of the ensemble cast, which includes returning Avengers alongside X-Men veterans like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen and Fantastic Four newcomers like Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby, a lengthy runtime was always going to be necessary to give each storyline room to breathe. Whether 170 minutes proves sufficient to service that massive roster remains to be seen once the film finally arrives.
