Glasgow’s Scottish Legal Life Building Set for Digital Destruction in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
If you’re in Scotland and a Marvel fan, you might want to get ready. For weeks now, people have been checking out famous spots around central Glasgow, getting ready to film the new Spider-Man movie. And there’s going to be an explosion, but only a digital one.
According to The Sunday Times, residents in central Glasgow have been warned that filming will start soon, with scenes being shot outdoors in places like George Square from August. Glasgow has become popular for Hollywood filmmakers because it can stand in for big American cities like New York and Philadelphia.
The new Spider-Man movie, called Spider-Man: Brand New Day, stars Tom Holland. The previous movie in the series, No Way Home, made a huge £1.9 billion worldwide. Filming will also happen on streets like Bothwell Street (which will partially close for a week), St Vincent Street, Waterloo Street, Oak Street, and Richmond Street.
Filmmakers have been paying special attention to the Scottish Legal Life Assurance building. This old building, built in the 1920s, looks like an American steel-framed office from that time. The special effects team is working on creating a digital version of the building to make it explode on screen.
There’s not much known about the new movie’s story yet, but it is set to hit cinemas in the summer of 2026.
Glasgow has a history of playing different American cities in movies. It was Gotham City in some versions of Batgirl and The Batman, Philadelphia in the opening scenes of World War Z, and New York in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It even played Moscow in the 2023 film Tetris.
Glasgow city leaders see this as a great opportunity. A spokesperson from Glasgow City Council said, “While we cannot comment on individual productions, the council’s Glasgow Film Office is in constant dialogue with film, broadcast and advertising productions of all sizes who are interested in filming in the city to establish how we can support them.”
They also added, “These productions bring a significant economic benefit to Glasgow, and have helped to steadily grow the capacity of our film and broadcast sector in recent years, as seen in new facilities such as the Kelvin Hall studio.”
On the Spider-Man front, the story behind this new film has been developing for a while. Tom Holland mentioned in 2021 that No Way Home might be his last film as Spider-Man, but he hoped to continue if asked. Since then, the filmmakers and studios have been working on the next story. Marvel’s Kevin Feige and producers have confirmed they are working on big ideas for the new movie.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is expected to direct this next Spider-Man film. Filming is planned to start in mid-2025, with the release date set for July 31, 2026. Sadie Sink recently joined the cast, and Jon Bernthal is set to return as Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will be back too, although how big their roles will be hasn’t been fully revealed.
This movie is shaping up to be an exciting new chapter for Spider-Man, and fans in Glasgow are lucky to see the action come to their city.
