The first trailer for How to Make a Killing has been released, giving audiences their earliest look at John Patton Ford’s new dark comedy thriller.

The film brings together a large cast, led by Glen Powell, who plays a character named Becket Redfellow. Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Topher Grace, Ed Harris, Raff Law, Sean Cameron Michael, and Bianca Amato are also part of the lineup. Amato appears as Cassandra Redfellow.

The movie has had a long road to the screen. Ford wrote the script years ago, and it first appeared on the 2014 Black List under a different title. Another director was attached at one point, and actors Shia LaBeouf and Mel Gibson were expected to star, but that early version never came together. The project eventually went quiet until 2023, when work started again with Ford choosing to direct the film himself.

During development, the film carried the working title Huntington. Reports at the time said the story took loose inspiration from the classic British film Kind Hearts and Coronets, and Ford continued building the movie around that idea.

Casting came in waves once the new version moved forward. Powell joined in early 2024, while Qualley and Harris signed on a few months later. The rest of the ensemble followed soon after, and filming began in Cape Town, where large teams of local crew members and extras took part in the shoot.

Audiences didn’t learn the final title until this November, when early previews shown in theaters confirmed the switch to How to Make a Killing. Now that the trailer is out, the tone of the film is clearer, showing a mix of humor and thriller elements that Ford has become known for.

A24 plans to release the movie in the United States on February 20, 2026, according to the latest updates.
