Glen Powell in Talks for ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Reboot as Producer Teases “Active Discussions”
Talks about a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie have been heating up since March, and Glen Powell’s name keeps coming up. Early rumors said the Top Gun: Maverick star might team up with Strange Darling director JT Mollner to take a swing at the iconic horror franchise. Not long after, the conversation grew into something bigger, multiple filmmakers were said to be in the mix, with Powell and Mollner still attached, this time with A24 reportedly involved.
When asked about the rumors, Mollner didn’t confirm anything directly but shared how much it meant to him that people were excited about the idea of him working on such a well-known property.
“It feels very good regardless of whether any of those rumors are true. It’s really nice because wow, people would like to see my version of that,” he said.
Mollner also opened up about his general thoughts on remakes and why he’s usually hesitant about them.
“My company used to be called No Remake Pictures. It’s now called Electric Lady, just in case, to keep my mind open. But I don’t like the idea of remaking movies that I think are perfect. And I will say that I do think Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a perfect horror film,” he explained.
When it comes to Glen Powell, Mollner had nothing but praise. He shared that their connection started when Powell watched Strange Darling, which led to a meeting between the two.
“Glen is a tremendous actor and one of the first real movie stars to come along in a long time. I was lucky enough somebody exposed him to Strange Darling, and we got to take a meeting and he was really excited about it,” Mollner said. “And I was excited about his work. So I do know him and I met him, and it was a really cool meeting. I’d love to do something with him at some point. But those rumors about TCM were strange. I didn’t know quite where they came from.”
At that point in the conversation, producer Roy Lee, who often works with Mollner and is producing his upcoming film The Long Walk, stepped in to clarify the situation.
“Well, there is some validity to it and we’re still in discussions, but nothing that’s concrete just yet,” Lee said.
Meanwhile, a tenth entry in the franchise titled Texas Chainsaw Legacy is already in early development. Behind the scenes, there’s also a bidding war going on for the rights to the future of the series. Several major names and studios are part of the talks. That includes Taylor Sheridan with Paramount Pictures, Oz Perkins and Bryan Bertino with Neon, JT Mollner and Glen Powell with A24, Roy Lee with Netflix, and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions.
So while nothing has been officially locked in, the buzz around a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot is real. Glen Powell and JT Mollner might end up being a part of it, but for now, everything’s still in early talks. Fans of the franchise will just have to wait and see who ends up bringing Leatherface back to the big screen.
