‘God of War’ Creator Roasts TV First Look as “Terrible” and SaysKratos Looks Like He is Doing His Business in the Woods
David Jaffe, the creator of the “God of War” video game series, didn’t hold back when reacting to the first official image from Amazon Prime’s upcoming “God of War” TV show. On his YouTube channel Saturday, Jaffe called the photo “so bad in so many ways.”
The image shows Kratos and his son in a forest setting. While Jaffe praised the showrunner Ron Moore as talented, he said the picture itself misses the mark. “I’m sure everybody’s trying real hard, [but] it’s so dumb,” Jaffe said.
He added, “Two things can be true. This can be a terrible image, and it is. It’s so bad in so many ways, which we’ll talk about in a moment. And Ron Moore is awesome, who is the showrunner… This guy is a juggernaut of a talented fellow. I have absolutely no doubt it is going to be a good show.”
Jaffe explained that he isn’t concerned with actor Ryan Hurst not looking exactly like Kratos. Instead, he takes issue with the character’s pose and expression in the photo, calling it a “dumb image.” “Kratos in this pose with this expression, not the guy’s face, but this expression, he just looks stupid,” he said. He questioned whether this is the best way to introduce a new character to audiences.

He also suggested that the photo might be intended to highlight the father-son relationship in the story. But even with that in mind, he still thinks the image could have been chosen better. “Maybe that’s conscious. Maybe they’re like, ‘Well, what we really want to focus on is the father-son story. And if we focus on him being like, Spartan rage, and all that, maybe people are like, ‘I don’t want to watch that show.’’ Ok maybe. But then, at that point, could you find a picture that doesn’t look like he’s sh**** in the woods? Cause that’s what the picture looks like.”
The first look was released by Amazon Prime on February 27. Along with Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as his son, the show also stars Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.
Jaffe’s full reaction can be seen on his YouTube channel, where he discusses the image and his thoughts about introducing such an iconic character to television for the first time.
Jaffe’s reaction is understandable and even a little funny. Fans of the game series have high expectations, and a first look carries a lot of weight. Whether people agree with him or not, it’s clear that everyone is watching closely to see how Kratos is brought to life on screen. What do you think about the first TV image of Kratos?
