Few movie marketing campaigns have built momentum as steadily as the one for ‘Godzilla Minus Zero‘. After a spectacular festival premiere and a string of teasers, Toho has now delivered the last big piece of the puzzle.

With only weeks until opening day, the moment fans have been waiting for has finally arrived.

The sequel follows ‘Godzilla Minus One’, which grossed $116 million on a $15 million budget. It was the highest-grossing live-action film to debut in Japan in 2023 and became the third highest-grossing non-English-language film in the United States.

The film also won Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards, which put writer-director Takashi Yamazaki on the global map. That success explains why every new look at the follow-up has drawn so much attention.

Toho and GKIDS released the final trailer on Sunday, October 11, as New York Comic Con wrapped up its weekend. It debuted through Toho’s YouTube channel and is billed as spoiler-free.

The footage leans on devastation and dread. One of its most shocking moments shows entire houses pulled into the sky, with people still inside them, before they are dropped to the ground below. A still from the trailer shows a traditional Japanese house tumbling through stormy air, glowing blue at its edges as someone clings to its balcony.

Godzilla himself also gets a moment. The monster powers up before unleashing his trademark atomic blast.

The biggest talking point is a hint at a new opponent. The trailer includes a yellow energy blast that almost certainly belongs to King Ghidorah. Like earlier footage, it hides the creature entirely, so audiences will have to wait until the film’s release to see him.

Some fans have connected the title to the hint. Ghidorah is known as Monster Zero in the franchise, which would make ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ a rather direct piece of naming. One theory even suggests the humans engineered Ghidorah as part of a plan to defeat Godzilla, though that remains pure speculation.

Not everyone found the trailer perfect. One reviewer said it puts the human characters first and saves the roar for last, adding that they wished it hit harder.

The story picks up in 1949, two years after the events of ‘Godzilla Minus One’, and continues the saga of the Shikishima family. Noriko’s condition, linked to her earlier exposure to Godzilla, also draws the family back into the crisis.

The sequel confirms that Godzilla was not fully destroyed at the end of the first film. Premiere coverage describes Godzilla and Ghidorah enduring several gruesome, bloody battles that escalate across land and sky.

Ryūnosuke Kamiki returns as Kōichi Shikishima, with Minami Hamabe as Noriko Ōishi. Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yūki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Sakura Andō and Miō Tanaka also come back.

Min Tanaka joins as biologist Kanji Murakami. Yamazaki again serves as director, screenwriter and visual effects supervisor, and composer Naoki Satō returns for the music.

The film is the first Japanese production to be filmed for IMAX, and the trailer shows the aspect ratio expanding in the second half. Shot with IMAX-certified digital cameras, it promises a big-screen experience designed to make Godzilla feel bigger and more terrifying than ever.

Tickets are on sale now. North American IMAX early-access screenings take place on November 3, with the nationwide release on November 6 through GKIDS. Japan gets the film on November 3 through Toho, which is also Godzilla Day.

The film will open the same week in Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, with additional international dates to be announced later. That is a notable expansion for a Japanese franchise film.

It also reflects how much the character’s global profile has grown since the last film. Between the awards recognition and the IMAX push, Toho is positioning the sequel as a true cinematic event.
