‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Just Landed a Major Festival Premiere, the King of Monsters Is Coming to NYC First

Franchise sequels rarely arrive with the kind of prestige treatment usually reserved for awards contenders, but then again, few franchise sequels follow up a film that pulled off a genuinely historic Oscar win. That’s exactly the position this particular kaiju follow-up finds itself in, and the festival circuit has taken notice in a big way.

Anticipation for this next chapter has been building steadily since its predecessor became an unexpected cultural phenomenon, turning a modestly budgeted genre film into one of the most celebrated blockbusters of its era. Now, that anticipation has an official kickoff point on the calendar.

Film at Lincoln Center has announced that Takashi Yamazaki’s ‘Godzilla Minus Zero‘ will make its world premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection of the 64th New York Film Festival, with the debut set for September 26 at Alice Tully Hall. The screening will take place more than a month before GKIDS releases the film theatrically in the United States on November 6, giving festival audiences the very first look at Yamazaki’s follow-up.

‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ serves as a direct sequel to 2023’s ‘Godzilla Minus One,’ picking up the story in 1949, two years after the events of the original film, and continuing the story of the Shikishima family as they face an entirely new calamity. According to the festival’s synopsis, the new installment promises even more astounding effects choreography than its predecessor while keeping its post-WWII Japan setting grounded at a human level.

Yamazaki and members of the film’s cast and crew are expected to attend the New York premiere in person. NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim praised the director’s continued vision for the franchise, saying, “More than 70 years after the first Godzilla movie, Takashi Yamazaki continues to prove that there’s life in the old franchise yet, returning to its postwar roots to locate a haunting, primal terror. Like its predecessor, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is a throwback blockbuster, a showcase for human drama and innovative craft, and we are excited to have its world premiere as this year’s NYFF Spotlight Gala.”

The original ‘Godzilla Minus One’ became a genuine phenomenon following its 2023 release, grossing more than $100 million worldwide against a comparatively modest budget, roughly ten times its production costs. Its success carried it through a strong awards run, ultimately bolstered further by a black-and-white re-release titled ‘Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color,’ which extended the film’s theatrical life well beyond its initial run.

That awards trajectory culminated in a genuinely historic moment for Yamazaki personally. At the 2024 Oscars ceremony, Yamazaki became the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, reflecting on the achievement by telling TheWrap, “To have my name next to Stanley Kubrick, no matter how niche or specific the list is, it means so much.”

It’s worth noting that this Toho-produced Japanese franchise exists entirely separately from Legendary’s American Monsterverse iteration of the character, meaning fans shouldn’t expect any crossover with that ongoing series, which has its own next installment, ‘Godzilla x Kong,’ slated for 2027.

‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ joins a stacked NYFF64 lineup that includes James Gray’s ‘Paper Tiger’ as the festival’s Opening Night selection, Tony Gilroy’s ‘Behemoth!’ as its Centerpiece film, and Ava DuVernay’s documentary ’14th’ closing out the festival. With the 64th New York Film Festival running from September 25 through October 12, kaiju fans now have a firm date to circle for their first glimpse of Godzilla’s latest rampage.
