Goodbye Hulu: Streaming App to Be Officially Shutdown in 2026
Disney just confirmed that it’s going all in on combining Hulu with Disney+. Starting in 2026, there will be a single Disney+ app that also has Hulu inside it. You’ll still be able to buy Hulu or Disney+ on their own, but the main focus will be on one big combined app.
Disney CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston said this change is meant to make streaming easier and more appealing for people. “Today we are announcing a major step forward in strengthening our streaming offering by fully integrating Hulu into Disney+,” they said in prepared remarks shared during Disney’s latest quarterly earnings. “This will create an impressive package of entertainment, pairing the highest-caliber brands and franchises, great general entertainment, family programming, news and industry-leading live sports content in a single app.”
The idea is simple: one app, one place to watch, fewer people canceling, and more money from ads. Iger also explained on the earnings call that both Disney+ and Hulu will run on the same tech system, which will help save costs. He said it also makes sense for ad sales since Disney already sells ads for both platforms together.
Disney says the new all-in-one app will offer more personalized features and an easier browsing experience. They believe that “by creating a truly differentiated streaming offering, we will be providing subscribers tremendous choice, convenience, quality, and enhanced personalization.” The company thinks this will help grow its profits, keep people watching longer, and open new advertising opportunities.
Hulu isn’t just changing in the US. Internationally, starting in fall 2025, Hulu will replace the Star section inside Disney+. This means it will become Disney’s global general entertainment brand.
Disney’s also making changes for Hulu’s live TV customers. They’ll be moved over to Fubo through a new joint venture that Disney will mostly own.
One other change: Disney will stop reporting subscriber numbers for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, following what Netflix and others have done.
On top of all that, Disney announced its ESPN stand‑alone streaming service will launch on August 21. It will cost $29.99 a month.
