Grant Gustin Says He’d Play The Flash Again – But Only for James Gunn’s DC Universe

Grant Gustin, who played Barry Allen in The Flash TV series for almost a decade, says he’s open to wearing the red suit again, but only if it’s for James Gunn’s new DC Universe. At a recent fan event, Gustin shared his thoughts on returning to the role that made him a household name.
During a Q&A panel at FAN EXPO Denver, a fan asked Gustin which character he’d like to play if James Gunn brought him into the new DCU. Gustin didn’t hesitate. “Flash,” he replied simply. That one-word answer was enough to get fans excited about the possibility.
“If James Gunn cast you in his DCU, who would you want to play?”

The Flash ran on The CW for nine seasons, ending in May 2023. It became the longest-running show in the Arrowverse with 184 episodes. Gustin became one of the most beloved versions of the character, with many fans hoping he might appear again now that the DC Universe is getting a fresh start under Gunn.
But as of now, there’s no sign of a new Flash movie happening in the DCU. Back in December 2024, Gunn said there’s been no development on that front. And while Gustin is clearly interested, he admits that nothing official is going on behind the scenes.
In a chat with The Wrap, Gustin explained that he and James Gunn have talked, but not about The Flash. “Like, we’ve never talked about Flash,” he said. “We’ve talked, just like, I’m a huge Superman fan. I’ve always been a Superman fan, since I was a kid. So I’m just really excited about the movie. And I’m excited about David’s casting.”
He was referring to Superman, Gunn’s upcoming DCU film, and David Corenswet, who’s set to play the new Man of Steel. Gustin and Gunn have exchanged messages before, especially when Gunn was first taking over DC Studios, but they’ve never met in person (at least at that point).
While fans would love to see Gustin return as the Scarlet Speedster, there’s no word yet if Flash will even show up in the first chapter of the new DCU, titled Gods and Monsters. After the last few attempts at bringing the character to the big screen, DC may be taking its time before trying again.
Still, Gustin’s love for the character hasn’t changed. If the opportunity ever comes up, it sounds like he’d be ready to run again, just as long as James Gunn is the one behind the camera.
