‘GTA 6’ Pre-Orders Are Closing In on Five Million, and the Ultimate Edition Is Crushing the Standard Version
Rockstar Games has spent years fueling anticipation for its next big open-world release with nothing more than a couple of cinematic trailers and a handful of screenshots. That drought of actual gameplay footage hasn’t stopped fans from opening their wallets in numbers that even industry veterans are struggling to find precedent for.
‘Grand Theft Auto VI‘ opened pre-orders back on June 25, months ahead of its planned November 19 launch, and the early numbers were already turning heads before Rockstar had shown a single second of gameplay. Analytics firm Sensor Tower has been tracking the rollout closely, and its estimates have painted a picture of demand that’s consistently outpaced typical industry benchmarks for premium editions.
That momentum has only accelerated. Sensor Tower’s latest estimates put ‘GTA 6’ pre-orders at nearly 5 million units following the release of ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look’ on August 27, a 26-minute showcase that reportedly sent pre-orders surging more than 570% over the two days surrounding its premiere. On the day of the reveal alone, estimated pre-orders jumped roughly 436% compared to the day before, with PlayStation accounting for the bulk of that spike.
Just as striking as the overall volume is how buyers are spending their money once they commit. Sensor Tower’s data shows close to 90% of all pre-order buyers have opted for the $100 Ultimate Edition rather than the standard $80 version, a split that dramatically outpaces how premium editions typically perform across the industry.
Karl Kontus, general manager of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower, framed just how unusual that split really is in comments to trade outlet GamesIndustry.biz. “A 50% premium share during preorders is a great number. Typical premium shares for games tend to be around 10 to 20%,” he said, before adding what’s become the most widely cited line from his analysis: “That being said, I have never seen a 90% premium share before.”
Unlike some premium tiers that mostly pad out a box with cosmetic extras, the Ultimate Edition includes content Rockstar has locked away entirely from standard buyers, including additional vehicles, weapons and access to a handful of exclusive in-game stores. Both editions come bundled with a nostalgia-driven Vintage Vice City pack, meaning the gap in adoption comes down almost entirely to what that extra $20 unlocks.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly described the pre-order numbers as unprecedented without offering official unit figures, and Kontus has separately projected that total pre-orders could climb as high as 25 million units by launch, translating to roughly $2 billion in advance revenue if that trajectory holds. Those are still analyst estimates rather than confirmed numbers from Rockstar or Take-Two, but the consistency across multiple data points has made them difficult to dismiss.
With nearly three months still left before launch and Rockstar’s full marketing push barely underway, the current pre-order pace suggests ‘GTA 6’ still has plenty of room to climb even further before November 19 arrives.
