At the 2025 Gotham Awards, Guillermo del Toro made a bold statement about his views on artificial intelligence while accepting a Vanguard Tribute for his Netflix film Frankenstein.

The director, joined on stage by stars Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac, praised the many artists who brought the film to life, from makeup artists and designers to cinematographers and composers.

“The artistry of all of them shines on every single frame of this film that was willfully made by humans, for humans,” del Toro said. He ended his speech with a pointed message: “It belongs to all of them, and I would like to extend our gratitude and say, f**k AI.”

The Vanguard Tribute at the Gotham Awards is given to films that push creative boundaries through bold artistic choices. Del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein, which features Elordi as the Creature and Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, was recognized as one of the night’s top honorees for its daring approach.

During his speech, Oscar Isaac also shared a heartfelt message highlighting the contributions of immigrants in the film industry. “I’m proud to be standing here tonight a Guatemalan, an Australian and a Mexican,” he said, referring to his own background, del Toro’s, and Elordi’s. “Immigrants baby, we get the job done.”

Del Toro’s speech drew attention for its strong stance against AI, emphasizing the value of human creativity in filmmaking. Isaac’s remarks, meanwhile, celebrated diversity and collaboration in Hollywood, reinforcing the importance of inclusion behind the camera and on screen.
