Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ Drops New Trailer Featuring Star-Studded Cast
A brand new trailer has dropped for Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited film Frankenstein, giving audiences new look at his take on Mary Shelley’s legendary story.
The movie, starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz, is set to arrive in theaters on October 17, before a global Netflix release on November 7.
The film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on August 30, where it screened in the main competition. It later appeared at both the Toronto International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival in September. Early reactions have already praised del Toro’s emotional and gothic approach.
In this version, Oscar Isaac plays Victor Frankenstein, a scientist whose obsession with conquering death leads him to create life in a shocking experiment. Jacob Elordi takes on the role of the Creature, while Mia Goth plays Elizabeth Lavenza.
Christoph Waltz appears as Henrich Harlander, a wealthy arms dealer who finances Victor’s work, and Charles Dance portrays Victor’s strict father. The cast also includes Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Lauren Collins, and Ralph Ineson in a cameo role.
There are two sides to every story.

Del Toro has been chasing this project for decades. He first spoke about his dream to make a faithful version of Frankenstein back in 2007.
Over the years, the project moved in and out of development at Universal Pictures, at one point with actor Doug Jones in early makeup tests. The director even considered Benedict Cumberbatch for the role of the Creature. But it wasn’t until Netflix revived the project in 2023, after the success of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, that production finally moved forward.
Filming began in Toronto in February 2024 and wrapped later that year, with additional scenes shot in Edinburgh and Lincolnshire. According to Variety, del Toro redesigned the Creature after Jacob Elordi replaced Andrew Garfield due to scheduling issues. Despite the last-minute change, the director said Elordi brought something new to the role.
Del Toro has been clear that he doesn’t see this as a horror movie. “Frankenstein to me is the pinnacle of everything, and part of me wants to do a version of it, part of me has for more than 25 years chickened out of making it,” he said in an earlier interview.
He described the story as deeply emotional and personal. Composer Alexandre Desplat, who wrote the score, explained, “Guillermo’s cinema is very lyrical, and my music is rather lyrical too. So I think the music of Frankenstein will be something very lyrical and emotional. I’m not trying to write horrific music.”
Del Toro also spoke about why the story has meant so much to him since childhood. “It was a religion for me. Since I was a kid — I was raised very Catholic — I never quite understood the saints. And then when I saw Boris Karloff on the screen, I understood what a saint or a messiah looked like. So I’ve been following the creature since I was a kid, and I always waited for the movie to be done in the right conditions,” he said during a Netflix event.
