Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton To Bring a Fresh Twist to ‘Wizard of Oz’ in Prime Video’s ‘Dorothy’

Prime Video is developing a modern series called Dorothy, a contemporary, music-filled retelling of The Wizard of Oz for young adults, sources say.

The show is created and produced by Gina Matthews under her Little Engine label. The series uses the Yellow Brick Road as a metaphor for the challenges and choices young people face today, blending adventure, emotion, and music.

Several big names are attached as executive producers. Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton of Lucky Horseshoe, Lee Metzger, Grant Scharbo of Little Engine, and Patrick Moran are all involved, though they are not writing for the series.

“I’ve been in love with The Wizard of Oz books since I was a child,” Matthews said. “The story reminds us of the qualities we need to get through hard times, and Dorothy is a symbol of strength who shows us that with a little kindness — and a lot of grit — we can not only achieve great things but also lift up those around us. I’m excited to bring that message to the world, now more than ever.”

Moran added, “I’m really excited to work with this creative team. I’m such a fan of everyone involved and couldn’t ask for a more exciting partnership as we reinvent this cherished IP.”

Scharbo said, “We’re thrilled to embark on this journey with Amazon and believe Dorothy will enchant a whole new generation of viewers.”

Shelton said, “We’re really excited about all the possibilities this show brings, and I’m so grateful that Gina shared the idea with me and Lee. I knew right away it was something Gwen would connect with. Her creativity and perspective are such a natural fit for this project.”

Stefani added, “It’s a creative and modern take on a classic, and being part of something that blends music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy is inspiring to me.”

Matthews has a strong background in movies and television, having produced films like 13 Going on 30 and Isn’t It Romantic. She also created the WB series The Mountain and Popular.

With this talented team behind it, Dorothy promises to bring a fresh, modern, and musical take on The Wizard of Oz, introducing the story to a whole new generation on Prime Video.
