The festival also celebrated Hudson’s long career. A special program looked back at more than two decades of her work, with focus on the film directed by Craig Brewer. In the movie she stars alongside Hugh Jackman as a couple who rebuild their lives by performing in a tribute band inspired by Neil Diamond.

Paltrow attended the ceremony to support Hudson. Their friendship goes back many years. She once threw Hudson a big birthday party and called her “my younger sister” in a post on Instagram. They also bonded as parents because their children went to the same school and both experienced the moment when their kids left for college.
