London hasn’t seen a red carpet quite like this in some time. Between visiting royalty, a cast full of awards-season heavyweights, and one of the most talked-about transformations of Tom Cruise’s career, Tuesday night’s world premiere in Leicester Square had all the makings of a genuine cultural event. It’s the kind of night that reminds you just how much star power one film can pull together when the timing is right.

That film is ‘Digger,’ director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s long-gestating satire starring Cruise, and its London debut doubled as a Royal Film Performance attended by Prince William and Princess Catherine. The evening drew a genuinely sprawling guest list that extended well beyond the film’s own cast, and one familiar face in particular caught fans’ attention among the crowd.

That face belonged to Hannah Waddingham, who posed for photos in a sparkly black strapless gown alongside her partner, Nick Beresford-Cleary. While Waddingham isn’t part of ‘Digger’s’ cast, her presence on the carpet makes sense given her existing connection to Cruise, having previously joined him on the set of ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ and spoken warmly about their working relationship in past interviews.

Waddingham was far from the only notable name working the carpet that night. ‘Digger’s’ core cast turned out in full force, including Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons, alongside additional guests like Salma Hayek, Emma D’Arcy, Sophie Wilde, J.J. Abrams, and Jodie Turner-Smith. William and Kate greeted Cruise and Iñárritu first on the carpet before meeting the rest of the cast, with Iñárritu escorting Prince William and Cruise escorting Princess Catherine down the line, according to Deadline’s coverage of the event.

The evening carried plenty of memorable moments beyond the fashion. Cruise took the stage to introduce the film, telling the crowd he had “never seen anything like it,” while Iñárritu playfully teased his star during his own remarks, joking that Cruise’s relentless positivity was almost uncomfortable, a line that reportedly got a genuine laugh out of the actor himself.

For those unfamiliar with the project, ‘Digger’ follows Cruise as Digger Rockwell, described as the most powerful man in the world, an oil tycoon who races to prove he is humanity’s savior before the environmental disaster his own company unleashed destroys everything. The film has reportedly been in development with Iñárritu for seven years and was shot in VistaVision, continuing the director’s reputation for ambitious, formally distinctive filmmaking.

Cruise underwent a significant physical transformation for the role, reportedly relying on prosthetics that originally took hours to apply each day. The film is set for release in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on October 2, following an earlier international rollout beginning September 30, giving audiences worldwide a chance to see just what all the red carpet fanfare was building toward.

Beyond Cruise, the ensemble includes a genuinely impressive roster of talent, with the screenplay credited to Iñárritu alongside Oscar winners Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, with a story credit shared by Berman, Iñárritu, and Jez Butterworth. Producer Mary Parent joined Cruise and Iñárritu in overseeing the project, which has already generated some of the most polarizing early critical reactions of the fall movie season heading into its wide release.

Whatever critics ultimately decide about ‘Digger’ itself, its London premiere delivered exactly the kind of star-powered spectacle studios dream of when launching a major fall release. Between royal attendees, a packed cast list, and surprise guests like Waddingham showing up to support Cruise, the night made clear just how much anticipation has built around this unconventional project.
