‘Harry Potter’ Actor Comes Back in an Unexpected Role for New Book Adaptation
Bill Nighy, the actor fans remember as Rufus Scrimgeour in the Harry Potter films, is returning to the wizarding world in a very different role.
Audible and J.K. Rowling’s Pottermore Publishing announced that Nighy will play Professor Slughorn in the upcoming Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions.
Slughorn is an important character in the later books. He was the professor who taught Tom Riddle, later known as Voldemort, about horcruxes.
After Voldemort’s return, Slughorn spends years in hiding but eventually returns to Hogwarts as the Potions Master. In this role, he takes over a position that had previously been held by Severus Snape.
Nighy spoke about taking on the new role, saying, “I was pleased to be asked to play the professor after having already played a Minister for Magic. Is it possible that I’m the only actor who can claim that achievement? It means that my career continues to have meaning for the next couple of generations.”
“I’m always grateful when asked to play academics, having not been further educated myself. I’m hoping to be a significant part of something that will keep children entertained in the car on those long journeys overseas or just on the way to school.”
So far, Nighy is the only actor from the original films returning for the Full-Cast Audio Editions. However, some other film actors are reprising their roles in different projects. For example, Warwick Davis will be back as Professor Flitwick for the upcoming HBO TV series.
The audio editions feature a star-studded cast, including Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen as Lord Voldemort, Riz Ahmed as Professor Snape, Michelle Gomez as Professor McGonagall, Mark Addy as Hagrid, Kit Harington as Professor Lockhart, Keira Knightley as Professor Umbridge, Simon Pegg as Arthur Weasley, and James McAvoy as Mad-Eye Moody.
This project gives fans a new way to experience the Harry Potter series with a mix of familiar and new voices.
In my opinion, it’s exciting to see actors returning in completely different roles. It adds a fresh twist while keeping the magic alive for listeners. What do you think about Bill Nighy taking on Slughorn and this all-star cast? Share your thoughts in the comments.
