Hayden Christensen Opens up About Playing Force Ghost Anakin in ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2

‘Ahsoka‘ fans have waited more than three years for new episodes since the show’s first season wrapped back in 2023, and that patience finally paid off this weekend. Disney used its D23 fan event to confirm not just a premiere date, but also the first proper look at what’s become one of the most anticipated storylines within the show’s second season, giving longtime fans plenty to react to after such a long gap between seasons.

That anticipation centers heavily on Hayden Christensen’s return as Anakin Skywalker, a role he’s played across two very different forms since ‘Ahsoka’ first premiered. Season 1 gave audiences a shocking Clone Wars-era flashback inside the World Between Worlds before closing the season with Anakin appearing as a Force Ghost, quietly watching over Ahsoka and Sabine on the planet Peridea.

At D23’s Disney Entertainment Showcase, Christensen joined Rosario Dawson, Eman Esfandi, and Lucasfilm president Dave Filoni to officially unveil Season 2’s first trailer, confirming January 20, 2027, as the show’s return date. During the panel, Christensen spoke about his character’s continued role in Ahsoka’s journey, explaining that Anakin continues to advise Ahsoka as she faces the growing threat posed by Grand Admiral Thrawn.

That guidance appears front and center throughout the new footage, with Anakin’s Force Ghost taking on a noticeably larger presence compared to his brief Season 1 appearance. Rather than a fleeting glimpse, this version of Anakin seems woven directly into Ahsoka’s ongoing training and decision-making as she navigates the dangers ahead.

The footage opens with Anakin asking Ahsoka what troubles her, telling her he’s always walking by her side as flashes of Clone Wars-era battles flicker across the screen. Later in the trailer, he challenges her directly, pushing her to answer whether she considers herself a Jedi or not, a question that seems to cut straight to the emotional core of her arc this season.

That blend of mentorship and challenge mirrors an approach the franchise has used successfully before, drawing comparisons to how ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ folded flashback material into its central story. Betting that audiences who grew up on the prequels are ready to revisit that era without irony, the choice to lean further into Anakin’s presence signals just how central his character has become to this next chapter.

Alongside Christensen’s expanded role, Dawson used the panel to tease just how serious a threat Thrawn poses this season, noting that his presence looms large over the entire galaxy as the story unfolds. With Grand Admiral Thrawn now confirmed to be actively moving against the New Republic, the stakes for Ahsoka’s mission appear considerably higher than anything the show has tackled before.

The returning cast also includes Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Lars Mikkelsen as Thrawn, and Ivanna Sakhno, while Rory McCann steps into the role of Baylan Skoll following the death of original cast member Ray Stevenson in 2023. With so many storylines converging heading into the new season, Christensen’s expanded presence as Anakin looks poised to anchor much of the emotional weight driving Ahsoka’s journey forward.
