HBO is Developing a New ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff Following Arya Stark – What We Know So Far

HBO is reportedly working on a new Game of Thrones spinoff focused on Arya Stark, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter. The project is in “very early development” and comes after plans for a Jon Snow-centered sequel fell through.

The spinoff already has a writer attached, Quoc Dang Tran, who previously worked on Apple TV’s Drops of God. No casting decisions have been made yet, including whether Maisie Williams will reprise her role as Arya. George R.R. Martin, the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, declined to comment on the project when asked.

The Arya spinoff seems to be replacing the previously discussed Jon Snow sequel. According to reports, Kit Harington wanted his character to have a darker, more isolated story, portraying Snow as “a broken man with PTSD.” The concept included Snow discarding his sword and living alone, ultimately meeting his end. HBO reportedly passed on this idea, calling it too bleak. Harington has since confirmed he is done with the role, telling fans, “No, god no. I don’t wanna go anywhere near it. I spent 10 years doing that. Thanks, I’m alright.”

Arya’s story picks up where she left off, sailing alone across Essos, giving HBO a way to explore a new part of the world separate from the remaining characters from Game of Thrones. How far the project progresses is still uncertain, but HBO’s ongoing plans for House of the Dragon and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms through 2028 show the network is committed to keeping the franchise alive for years.

Focusing on Arya is a smart move. She’s a fan favorite, and her solo adventures could bring fresh energy to the Game of Thrones universe without retreading old storylines.
