HBO Max is bringing “The Conjuring” to television. A new series based on the popular horror film franchise is now in development, and Variety reports that Nancy Won has joined the project as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.

Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires will also write for the series. HBO Max has not commented on the news.

The TV series was first reported to be in development in 2023. While plot details are being kept secret, the show will continue the story from the movies.

Peter Safran remains involved as an executive producer, and James Wan’s Atomic Monster is producing the series. Warner Bros. Television is the studio behind the project.

The announcement comes shortly after the release of “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” the fourth movie in the franchise. The film has been a hit, earning over $194 million worldwide. The first film in the series came out in 2013 and starred Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, a couple of paranormal investigators.

Since then, the franchise has grown to include four main films, plus the spinoffs “Annabelle” and “The Nun.” Together, the movies have made nearly $2.5 billion worldwide.

Nancy Won has a strong track record in television. She has worked on shows like Sunny for Apple TV+, Tiny Beautiful Things and Little Fires Everywhere for Hulu, and the Marvel series Jessica Jones on Netflix. She also wrote for Jericho and Supernatural.

Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires are also experienced writers. Cameron has worked on Marvel projects like the special Werewolf by Night and series such as Moon Knight, WandaVision, and Agatha All Along. Squires contributed to WandaVision, Agatha All Along, Agent Elvis, the Star Wars series The Acolyte, and the second season of Gen V.

According to Matthew Belloni of Puck News, the studio is also looking at a possible prequel following the huge box office numbers. As Belloni put it, “Given the box office numbers, of course they are.”

Turning “The Conjuring” into a TV series is a smart move. The movies have a huge fan base, and a series could explore the Warrens’ stories in more depth. It could bring a fresh way to experience the franchise for fans and newcomers alike. What do you think about a “Conjuring” TV series? Share your thoughts in the comments.
