HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Casts James and Lily Potter, and Harry’s Family Tree Just Got Real

Few characters in the wizarding world cast a longer shadow than two people who barely get any screen time. Harry’s parents are the reason the boy wizard has a scar, a legend and a lonely childhood under the stairs.

HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series has been rolling out its casting in waves, from the golden trio to the Hogwarts staff and the Dursleys. Still, two of the most emotionally important roles had stayed under wraps, leaving fans wondering who would step into the shoes of James and Lily.

That mystery is now solved. HBO has cast Jasper Talbot as James Potter and Hannah Chinn as Lily Potter in ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, with the first season set to arrive on Christmas Day.

Talbot is best known for his stage work, including Michael Grandage’s production of ‘The Line of Beauty’. His main screen credit so far is a turn in the third season of ‘Broadchurch’, which makes this a major step up in visibility.

Chinn is a screen veteran by comparison, with credits including ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’, where she played a television news anchor, as well as ‘Malpractice’, ‘The Trap’ and ‘Domina’.

Both actors are closer in age to the book versions of the characters than Adrian Rawlins and Geraldine Somerville, who played the roles in the films. That’s another sign the series is leaning into the books.

HBO announced a third addition at the same time. Harry Gilby, whose credits include ‘The Last Kingdom’, will play Charlie Weasley, Ron’s older brother who works with dragons.

Charlie is a minor character in the books and never appeared in the films, so the show is already straying from the movie version of the Weasley family. He is the second-oldest of the Weasley children, after Bill, and his first physical appearance in the books doesn’t come until ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’.

Some commentators have suggested that he could pop up in the storyline involving Hagrid’s baby dragon, Norbert.

HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series Is Shaping Up to Be One of the Most Expensive Shows the Network Has Ever Made

In the films, James and Lily appeared in flashbacks, photographs and magical manifestations. It is not yet known how prominent the roles will be in the new series.

The longer television format gives the show room to expand beyond the source material. That could mean more flashbacks with Harry’s parents, and potentially appearances for Charlie, in this season and future ones.

Their story is also what sets everything in motion. The infamous standoff between the couple and the Dark Lord leaves Harry an orphan and kicks off the events of the books.

The pair join an already stacked ensemble. Dominic McLaughlin leads as Harry, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Bel Powley plays Petunia Dursley, who in the series tells Harry there is nothing special about him.

The second season is already taking shape too. Announced castings include Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart, Bonnie Hill as Ginny Weasley, Lenny Rush as Dobby, Billy Barratt as Tom Riddle and Rafe Spall as Arthur Weasley.

Francesca Gardiner, whose credits include ‘Succession’, ‘His Dark Materials’ and ‘Killing Eve’, writes and executive produces the series as showrunner. Mark Mylod, known for ‘Succession’, ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘The Last of Us’, executive produces and directs multiple episodes.

The show is produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television, and it is based on J.K. Rowling’s bestselling books.

With the Christmas Day premiere approaching, the casting news adds another piece to the puzzle. Seeing James and Lily brought to life with actors closer to the characters’ book ages could make the early scenes hit harder than they did on film.
