HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Finally Reveals Its Young Voldemort, and Fans Already Have Feelings
The casting puzzle behind HBO’s ‘Harry Potter‘ series keeps getting more interesting with every passing month. As the show gears up for its second season, the production has been steadily filling out its Hogwarts roster with fresh young talent, each new name sparking fresh debate among longtime fans of the franchise.
That anticipation has only grown louder in recent weeks, especially around the darker corners of the story. ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,’ the book that forms the backbone of Season 2, introduces some of the wizarding world’s most complicated characters, and viewers have been eager to see who would bring them to life on screen.
Now HBO has answered one of the biggest questions hanging over the project. Billy Barratt has been cast as young Voldemort, also known as Tom Riddle, marking one of three major additions to the Season 2 cast. Lenny Rush will play the beloved house-elf Dobby, while Bonnie Hill steps into the role of Ginny Weasley.
Barratt is no stranger to acclaimed performances. The English actor holds the distinction of being the youngest-ever International Emmy winner, having claimed the honor at just 13 years old for his work on ‘Responsible Child.’ Since then, he has built a resume that includes ‘Invasion,’ ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ ‘Crater’ and ‘Bring Her Back.’
His casting also puts an end to months of fan speculation. Many online had floated ‘Adolescence’ breakout Owen Cooper as a potential pick for Tom Riddle, though that rumor was never confirmed by HBO or anyone officially attached to the series.
Tom Riddle becomes central to the plot in ‘Chamber of Secrets’ when he resurfaces through an enchanted diary that finds its way into Ginny Weasley’s hands. That connection makes Hill’s casting as Ginny especially significant, since her arc is tightly woven with Barratt’s version of the character throughout the season.
Notably, the production is leaning younger with this portrayal than the films did. Barratt is reportedly in his high teens, closer to Riddle’s book age of 16, whereas Christian Coulson was 23 when he played the role in the 2002 film adaptation.
Hill’s casting also comes with a bit of behind-the-scenes context. She takes over the role after Gracie Cochrane, who played Ginny in Season 1, stepped away from the part following the season’s wrap.
Even with Barratt locked in, one major mystery still looms over the series: who will play the adult Voldemort. HBO has kept that casting decision tightly under wraps, and it remains one of the last major pieces of the puzzle for the show’s future seasons.
Names like Paul Bettany and Tom Hiddleston have circulated among fans, and even Ralph Fiennes, who famously played the character across five films, has weighed in on the conversation without confirming any involvement himself. For now, all eyes are on Barratt to establish the teenage foundation of the character before that larger reveal ever happens.
Season 2’s casting additions arrive alongside news that filming is already underway, with several cast members confirming they returned to set in August, ahead of the previously announced fall start. That head start comes as Season 1 of HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ prepares for its December 25 premiere on HBO Max, adapting ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.’
The core Season 1 cast remains intact heading into the new season, with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. They’re joined by John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, with Kit Harington also set to join Season 2 as Gilderoy Lockhart.
With Barratt, Rush and Hill now confirmed, ‘Chamber of Secrets’ is shaping up to be a season defined by fresh faces stepping into some of the franchise’s most iconic roles. Whether longtime fans embrace this new vision of Tom Riddle remains to be seen once the season eventually arrives.
