HBO Max’s And Just Like That… is saying goodbye after three seasons. The series, a sequel to the beloved Sex and the City, will finish its run with the current season, which has been expanded to 12 episodes and will close with a special two-part finale.

Showrunner Michael Patrick King broke the news to the cast on Thursday, according to sources. In a statement released Friday morning, King explained the decision. “And just like that… the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end,” he said. “While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.”

Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12. SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season. It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.” He said.

The series first premiered in December 2021, bringing back Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) for new adventures in New York City. Over the seasons, fans watched Carrie face life after the death of Mr. Big, Miranda explore her identity and relationships, and Charlotte juggle motherhood and career.

This season, Carrie is moving forward from her relationship with Aidan, Miranda is navigating new romances, and Charlotte is still balancing family life with her personal goals.

While the show had a big start, drawing in new HBO Max subscribers and becoming one of the streamer’s most-watched premieres, viewership has dropped. According to Samba TV, the Season 3 premiere brought in 429,000 households, compared to 463,000 for the Season 2 debut.

The series has been both praised and criticized since its debut. Some viewers appreciated the attempt to update the world of Sex and the City, while others felt it was heavy-handed in its handling of modern social and cultural themes. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score sits at 33%, with critics also giving mixed reviews.

Despite the divided opinions, And Just Like That… managed to keep its place in pop culture conversations. Now, with the decision made to wrap it up, fans will soon say goodbye to Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte once more, this time, for good.
