‘Heart of the Beast’ Earns Wild CinemaScore as Audiences Fall for Brad Pitt’s Survival Drama

Brad Pitt has built a career out of reinventing himself with nearly every new project, and his latest outing takes him about as far from familiar territory as he’s gone in years. Rather than another crime thriller or ensemble action piece, ‘Heart of the Beast’ finds the actor stripped down to something far more elemental: one man, one dog and the brutal Alaskan wilderness between them.

That kind of pivot could easily have gone wrong in less capable hands, especially paired with director David Ayer, a filmmaker better known for gritty urban violence than tender survival stories. Early buzz suggested audiences and critics alike were pleasantly surprised by just how far the film strayed from expectations.

Now the verdict from opening night crowds is in, and it’s overwhelmingly positive. ‘Heart of the Beast’ earned an A- CinemaScore following its September 25 release, according to Exhibitor Relations, a grade that reflects just how emotionally the film has connected with the audiences who showed up on its first night in theaters.

That reaction lines up closely with the critical consensus building around the film in the days leading up to release. ‘Heart of the Beast’ opened with a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, later settling around 91%, still marking the best-reviewed film of Ayer’s career and placing it among the strongest reviewed titles of Pitt’s filmography, trailing only ‘Moneyball’ at 94% and ‘True Romance’ at 93%.

The film follows James Belmont, a retired Special Forces officer played by Pitt, who becomes stranded in the Alaskan wilderness alongside his combat dog Odin after a harrowing plane crash. What sounds on paper like a straightforward survival thriller has instead been described by critics as something closer to an unexpected love story.

Variety’s Owen Gleiberman praised Pitt’s performance as genuine and understated, while also crediting Uber, the dog actor playing Odin, with delivering some of the year’s most affecting on-screen work. The Hollywood Reporter similarly noted that despite its rugged premise, the film carries an emotional weight reminiscent of an old-school family classic, built around the bond between Pitt’s character and his canine co-star.

Deadline’s Pete Hammond went a step further in his review, joking that Odin’s performance deserves genuine awards recognition. “As for Odin, has any dog ever won an Oscar? Lassie, Benji, anyone?” he wrote. “Well, it’s high time. Odin delivers one of the best performances by an actor this year, hands down.”

For Ayer, whose recent filmography has leaned heavily into darker, more nihilistic territory with projects like ‘The Beekeeper’ and ‘Suicide Squad,’ ‘Heart of the Beast’ represents a dramatic tonal shift that’s paying off in a big way. The 91% Rotten Tomatoes score marks the best-reviewed film of his career by a wide margin.

That critical reception hasn’t necessarily translated into blockbuster box office numbers just yet, with tracking services estimating a domestic opening weekend somewhere between 14 million dollars and 20 million dollars against an 82 million dollar production budget. Still, that range would place the film in solid, profitable territory rather than the kind of splashy debut that dominates headlines, giving it room to build momentum into October as the fall box office calendar clears out.

With strong reviews, a rare A- CinemaScore and word-of-mouth clearly building around Odin’s scene-stealing performance, ‘Heart of the Beast’ looks positioned to be one of the more quietly successful releases of the season. For Pitt, it’s proof that stepping outside his usual comfort zone can still yield some of the most acclaimed work of his career.
