Elizabeth Taylor made history as the first actor to earn $1 million for a single movie, thanks to her iconic role in the 1963 epic Cleopatra.

Before her groundbreaking payday, Hollywood stars like Mary Pickford and Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle had already earned huge salaries during the Golden Age of cinema, but Taylor’s contract marked a new milestone in film paychecks.

Cinema in the mid-20th century was booming. After the wars and the Great Depression, movies offered audiences both escapism and hope. By 1946, around 60% of Americans were going to the cinema weekly, and the industry was raking in money.

Stars became a major draw for audiences, and their pay reflected their box office pull. Pickford earned thousands weekly and even secured “goodwill” payments for her family. Arbuckle later earned a guaranteed $1 million per year.

By the 1960s, however, Hollywood faced new competition. Television was becoming common in households, and pop music, especially the rise of the Beatles, started drawing attention away from the big screen.

In response, studios invested heavily in blockbuster films, hoping to reclaim audiences. Cleopatra became 20th Century Studios’ answer, with Elizabeth Taylor at its center.

Taylor negotiated a record-breaking contract that made her the first actor to earn $1 million for a single film. Beyond her base salary, she secured 10% of the movie’s gross profits and additional bonuses if production costs exceeded the budget—which they did. In the end, Taylor earned around $7 million from Cleopatra, a sum equivalent to roughly $69 million today.

Reflecting on the deal, she once said, “If someone is dumb enough to offer me a million dollars to make a picture, I’m certainly not dumb enough to turn it down.” Tim Mendelson, her chief of staff, added, “Elizabeth worked from the age of 9, so she understood the value of money.”

Elizabeth Taylor’s payday not only made history but also highlighted the growing influence of star power in Hollywood. Her savvy contract set a new standard for negotiating talent in blockbuster films, proving that big names could command record-breaking pay.

Taylor’s story reminds us how far Hollywood salaries have come and how much leverage a leading star can have. It’s fascinating to see how one role could change industry standards forever. What do you think about Elizabeth Taylor’s record-breaking contract? Share your thoughts in the comments.
