Amanda Seyfried has given fans a small glimmer of hope about Mamma Mia 3. In an interview with Deadline at the Toronto International Film Festival, she was asked if the third film in the beloved musical series was in the works.

Seyfried, who plays Sophie Sheridan in the Mamma Mia! films, first appeared in the 2008 original, where her character invites three men to her wedding to find out which one is her father.

She returned for the 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!. The original movie earned over $610 million worldwide, making it one of the top-grossing films of that year.

When asked about a third film and whether it’s still in development, Seyfried hesitated before responding, “Yeah, it is,” and then added with a laugh, “I think.”

She explained that many of her co-stars, including Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, and even Meryl Streep, are interested in making another movie. “It was their way of marketing and getting support,” she said, but emphasized that “big movies like that are all about studio timing.”

Seyfried also noted that the release of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! was affected by other big projects. She said, “I remember they did ‘Mamma Mia 2’ instead of Wicked…They could only do one big movie at that time, so we ended up sliding into that. So it’s actually about silly things like that, and story, silly things like that.”

Seyfried is currently attending TIFF for the North American premiere of The Testament of Ann Lee, a musical drama about the founder of the Shaker movement.

The film also stars Thomasin McKenzie, Lewis Pullman, Stacy Martin, Tim Blake Nelson, and Christopher Abbott. So far, the movie has only screened at film festivals, and a theatrical release has not yet been announced.

Fans hoping for Mamma Mia 3 may have to wait, but Seyfried’s comments show there’s interest from the cast. What do you think, should the story continue? Share your thoughts in the comments.
