Hilary Duff Breaks Silence on Sister Fallout, Says Rift With Haylie Duff Inspired Her Most Personal Song Yet, “We Don’t Talk”
Hilary Duff is opening up about a painful chapter in her personal life. The singer and actress has confirmed that one of the most emotional songs on her new album, “Luck… or Something,” is about her broken relationship with her sister, Haylie Duff.
Listeners quickly focused on the track “We Don’t Talk” after the album dropped. Many believed the lyrics pointed to tension between the two sisters. During a recent interview on CBS Mornings with Anthony Mason, Hilary confirmed that the song is about Haylie.
It’s definitely about my sister, and just absolutely the most lonely part of my existence is not having my sister in my life at the moment, she said.
Hilary explained that she was unsure about putting the song on the album. It was a hard decision. She knew the topic was deeply personal. Really struggled with thinking about including that on the record, she admitted. Still, she decided to release it because she believes many people go through similar family problems. So many people are having that experience and a lot of conversations with people are like, yeah, me too.

In the song, Hilary questions how the distance between them began. She sings about not knowing when things changed or what caused it. One lyric suggests she would give up everything to fix the relationship. Haylie has also worked in music, which made fans even more convinced about who the song was about.
Hilary became emotional while talking about her sister. She said sharing the song felt honest and healing. I think because it’s my truth and like I said, so many people are having this experience, she explained.
She also spoke about growing up in the public eye. Because she has been famous since childhood, much of her life has played out online. That makes private struggles harder to handle. It’s hard to watch your life unfold on the internet sometimes with talking heads on TikTok speculating this, that and the other. Sometimes they’re wrong and sometimes they’re right and all of that is just a crazy thing to process. I think I just try to less and less let that noise seep in but obviously it’s there.
When asked if she wants Haylie to hear the song, Hilary was honest. I don’t think that would help… I don’t know if she’ll hear it. I don’t know how she’ll react to it. But it is a really personal part of my life that doesn’t get to stay personal, so I might as well say how it is for me as an experience. And that’s all I’m trying to do. I’m not trying to say anything bad, it’s literally just my experience. And that’s really all I feel like sharing.
Hilary made it clear that the song is not meant to attack her sister. It reflects her own feelings about the situation. For now, the distance between them remains.
It takes courage to speak openly about family issues, especially when you are famous. Sharing personal pain through music can help others feel less alone. At the same time, family conflicts are sensitive and complicated. What do you think about Hilary sharing this story in her music? Do you believe it helps or makes things harder?
