The Game Awards announced its full list of nominees on Monday, and one title stood far ahead of the rest. According to the official announcement from The Game Awards, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 earned 12 nominations, the most any game has ever received in the event’s 11-year history.

The show, hosted once again by Geoff Keighley, will take place on December 11 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

The event will run for three hours and will include awards, new game reveals, and live performances. The team behind the show also confirmed that cast members from Amazon’s Fallout series will appear onstage.

The Game Awards first launched in 2014 and has grown every year. Last year’s broadcast drew more than 154 million livestreams across platforms like YouTube, Twitch, X, TikTok and several services in China. This year, the show will also stream on Prime Video as part of a new partnership with Amazon.

Much of the attention this year is centered on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, developed by French studio Sandfall Interactive. The game released in April for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, and it was also available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. It quickly earned strong reviews and passed 5 million copies sold by October, according to publisher Kepler Interactive.

The RPG is set in a dark, Belle Époque-inspired world and follows a group known as Expedition 33 as they fight against a mysterious figure called the Paintress. The game mixes turn-based battles with real-time timing mechanics.

Sandfall Interactive began the project in 2019, led by Guillaume Broche, who left Ubisoft during the pandemic to build a new studio. The team drew inspiration from classic Japanese RPGs and wanted to create a modern game in that style. Development later moved from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 to take advantage of better visuals.

Now, the game’s success has carried into awards season with record-setting nominations in categories that include Game of the Year.
