Hit MCU Show With 91% on Rotten Tomatoes Gets Cancelled After Season 2 Renewal

Marvel’s television slate has always been something of a gamble, with Disney+ churning out a steady stream of limited series built around beloved comic characters. Most of those shows land, generate buzz for a few weeks, and then quietly ride off into the sunset without a second season in sight.

That pattern made ‘Wonder Man’ stand out earlier this year. The meta-textual dramedy starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley became one of the rare live-action Marvel shows to actually score a renewal, joining only ‘Loki’ and ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ in that exclusive club.

Now that renewal has been reversed. Disney+ has officially un-renewed ‘Wonder Man,’ meaning the acclaimed series will not move forward with a second season after all.

According to Variety, a writers’ room for season two was never opened, and the show’s writers have already been released to pursue other projects. The decision effectively kills the second season before it ever had a chance to take shape, despite the show having been given the green light back in March.

It is a stunning reversal for a series that, by most measures, looked like one of Marvel’s biggest recent creative wins. ‘Wonder Man’ follows Simon Williams, a struggling actor hiding his powers while trying to break into Hollywood, and his unlikely bond with Trevor Slattery, Kingsley’s washed-up thespian turned fake Mandarin. The show leaned hard into its meta commentary on the entertainment industry rather than typical superhero spectacle, and critics ate it up.

The numbers back that reception up too. Season one holds a 91 percent critical score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside an 87 percent audience score, and Abdul-Mateen II even landed an Emmy nomination for his performance as Simon.

So why cancel a show that critics and fans clearly loved? The most cited factor is viewership. ‘Wonder Man’ drew a strong premiere week, pulling in 618 million minutes of viewing time on Nielsen’s streaming charts, but it fell out of the top 10 almost immediately afterward and never charted again.

That drop-off apparently outweighed the critical acclaim when it came time for Disney to commit real resources to a second season. Reports note that while ‘Wonder Man’ is not proceeding with a second season, the characters could still turn up elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe down the line, though nothing concrete has been confirmed.

That possibility offers little comfort to fans still processing the show’s cliffhanger ending, in which Simon broke Trevor out of a Department of Damage Control prison after Trevor took the fall and once again became the Mandarin to protect his friend. A second season felt like the natural place to pick up that thread, and its absence leaves the story dangling in a way that has become uncomfortably familiar for MCU Disney+ viewers.

The cancellation is especially jarring given how recently the cast and crew were still openly planning for what came next. Asked point-blank about a season two timeline in an interview with Collider, co-creator Destin Daniel Cretton responded, “I hope so. We’ll leave it at that,” suggesting cameras could roll before the end of the year.

Abdul-Mateen II himself had been more guarded about the show’s future. Speaking with IndieWire back in May, the actor said he had not yet had any creative conversations about a potential second season, though he added that he still had plenty of ideas for where he would like to see Simon’s story go as the character grapples with newfound fame.

For now, ‘Wonder Man’ joins the long list of one-and-done Marvel Disney+ series, an outcome that feels particularly cruel given how close it came to breaking that mold entirely.
