‘House of Cards’ Star Kevin Spacey Says His Hollywood Comeback Is Finally Happening: “Things Are Moving in the Direction We Hoped”
Kevin Spacey says he feels like he is slowly returning to Hollywood after years of legal battles, public criticism, and losing major acting opportunities following multiple sexual misconduct allegations.
The Oscar-winning actor spoke about his career and his future during an appearance on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast. Spacey said he believes the situation around him has started to change and that people are becoming more open to hearing his side of the story.
“I feel much more welcomed, and I think that things are moving in the direction that we hoped they were moving in,” Spacey told Maher.
During the conversation, Spacey pointed to the legal victories he has had in recent years, saying he has won every court case that went before a jury. He specifically mentioned the civil lawsuit brought by actor Anthony Rapp, who accused Spacey of assaulting him when Rapp was a teenager. A New York jury found Spacey not liable in that case.
Spacey also addressed the wider accusations that damaged his reputation and career. While he denied many of the claims made against him, he admitted that some of his past behavior crossed boundaries.
“I never said there was no fire,” Spacey said. “It just wasn’t a raging forest fire. It was a small kitchen fire that could have been put out with an extinguisher.” The actor also admitted that he had behaved in ways that were inappropriate, saying, “I hit on a lot of guys.”
Maher, while sympathetic during parts of the interview, said he believed Spacey should have faced consequences. The comedian explained that he was not an expert on every detail of the accusations but felt that the number of claims made the situation serious. “There’s too much smoke to be no fire,” Maher said.
Spacey responded that he believes he has already faced major consequences. He compared his situation to a long suspension in sports and argued that he has spent years dealing with the fallout.
“I feel less in jail than I did,” Spacey said. “When people actually start to hear the facts, understand what we won in courts, I think people now look at this and think, maybe nine years has been enough.”
The controversy led to major changes in Spacey’s career. He was removed from Netflix’s political drama House of Cards and replaced by Christopher Plummer in the film All the Money in the World. For several years, Spacey struggled to find major Hollywood roles and instead appeared mostly in smaller independent projects and international productions.
In the interview, Spacey also spoke about his sexuality and the decision to publicly come out as gay in 2017. He admitted he had kept that part of his life private for many years.
“I was fiercely closeted… I thought I was so clever that nobody knew, but of course kind of everybody knew,” Spacey said.
Maher questioned why Spacey had hidden his sexuality for so long, saying that being openly gay had become more accepted in the entertainment industry.
Spacey’s comments come as he attempts to rebuild his career and public image. While he says he feels more welcomed again, his return to the industry remains a complicated topic, with audiences and Hollywood figures continuing to debate his place in entertainment.
