‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Premiere Leaves Fans Stunned Over Controversial Incest Scene
After a long wait, House of the Dragon finally returned with its Season 3 premiere, giving fans more Targaryen drama, family conflicts, and shocking moments. However, one scene involving Aemond Targaryen and his mother Alicent Hightower quickly became the biggest talking point online.
The Game of Thrones prequel has never been afraid to explore dark and uncomfortable parts of the Targaryen family history. From political betrayals to complicated relationships, the series has always pushed boundaries. But even longtime viewers were caught off guard by a tense moment between Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and Alicent (Olivia Cooke).
During the episode, the two characters share an emotional conversation that ends with Aemond kissing his mother on the lips. Alicent appears uncomfortable and shocked by the unexpected move, but she does not push him away. Instead, she gives him an awkward reaction before he steps back.
The scene immediately caused a strong reaction among fans, with many viewers taking to social media to share their disbelief. Some described the moment as one of the most disturbing scenes the series has shown so far, while others questioned why the show decided to include it.
One fan wrote, “This is definitely the most disturbing scene in House of the Dragon.” Another viewer said, “Man… that was very awkward to watch… I was speechless.” Others were even more direct, calling the moment “gross and unnecessary.”
While the scene shocked many viewers, it also fits into the complicated history of House Targaryen. The family has a long tradition of relationships between relatives, with Aemond’s brother Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) being married to their sister Helaena (Phia Saban). Still, many fans felt that a mother and son dynamic crossed a different line.
Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond, also addressed the controversial moment in an interview with PEOPLE. The actor admitted that filming the scene was challenging but also gave him a chance to show a different side of his character.
“Yeah, it’s kind of shocking,” Mitchell said. “But then also, I just recognized a tremendous challenge and an opportunity to show Aemond in a new light.”
The actor explained that Aemond’s actions come from his damaged understanding of love and affection. According to Mitchell, Aemond grew up feeling unwanted and unsupported, which affected how he connects with people.

“It’s quite a difficult pill to swallow, isn’t it? Kissing your mom on the lips, especially in that way,” Mitchell said. He added that Aemond “never felt like he was loved enough by his mom and his family around him,” which shaped his unusual behavior.
Mitchell believes the moment shows Aemond’s emotional struggles rather than simple attraction. The character has always been driven by anger, insecurity, and a desire for approval, and the scene gives viewers another look at the trauma behind his actions.
The actor also praised working with Olivia Cooke, calling their scenes together a “masterclass.” Their complicated relationship remains one of the most interesting parts of the new season, especially as Alicent tries to control the future of her family while Aemond becomes more powerful and unpredictable.
With House of the Dragon continuing its latest chapter, fans can expect more intense family drama, difficult choices, and moments that will likely create even more debate. The series airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
