‘House of the Dragon’ Season 4: Release Date, Cast, and Everything We Know So Far
‘House of the Dragon‘ just wrapped its bloodiest season yet, closing out the Battle of Tumbleton with a string of devastating deaths and a fractured Targaryen dynasty heading into total war. With that finale now behind fans, attention has already shifted toward what comes next for HBO’s flagship ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel.
That next chapter isn’t a question mark, since HBO locked in the show’s future well before Season 3 even premiered. During an HBO and HBO Max slate presentation in New York City on November 20, 2025, chairman and CEO Casey Bloys officially confirmed the series would return for a fourth season, extending the franchise’s run alongside sister series ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.’
According to that announcement, ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 4 is set to premiere sometime in 2028, maintaining the roughly two-year gap that’s separated each of the show’s previous seasons. Given that Season 1 arrived in 2022, Season 2 in June 2024, and Season 3 in the summer of 2026, that pattern suggests a release window landing around spring or early summer of 2028, though HBO has not yet confirmed an exact date.
Showrunner Ryan Condal has been clear that this upcoming season will mark the end of the road for the series. He first indicated the show would run four seasons total back in August 2024 following the Season 2 finale, and while HBO’s Bloys has stopped short of formally confirming Season 4 as the definitive series finale, he’s acknowledged the network typically leaves that call to the show’s creators.
Despite Season 4 still being roughly two years away, writing on the season is reportedly already well underway. Speaking at a Season 3 press conference, Condal revealed the team is actively showing early script drafts to HBO, describing the process as staying well ahead of where the show typically is at this stage of development while Season 3 was still being finished in post-production.
That head start could help the final season avoid some of the production delays that impacted Season 3, which was affected by the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Filming for Season 3 ran from March through October of 2025, though no official start date for Season 4 production has been announced yet.
Given how brutal the Season 3 finale proved for several major characters, casting details for Season 4 remain limited this early in development. One confirmed name so far is Freddie Fox, who plays Ser Gwayne Hightower and told Hello! that after wrapping another project, he hoped to return for the show’s final season.
That confirmation carries extra weight for fans familiar with George R.R. Martin’s source material, ‘Fire & Blood,’ given Gwayne’s fate within the books. With so many other major characters left in precarious positions following the Season 3 finale, from Aegon’s dragon-backed return to the fallout of Helaena’s death, exactly who else survives long enough to appear in the final season remains very much an open question.
Following the fallout of the Battle of Tumbleton, Season 4 will need to resolve the Dance of the Dragons’ bloodiest chapter yet, with the realm now closer to complete disorder than at any prior point in the series. Fans can likely expect a first teaser trailer sometime around spring 2028, based on the roughly three-month gap between Season 3’s April trailer and its June premiere.
With scripts already in progress and HBO fully committed to closing out the Targaryen civil war, ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 4 looks set to deliver the franchise’s most consequential chapter yet.
