‘House of the Dragon’ Star Emma D’Arcy Reveals How That Shocking Death Changes Rhaenyra Forever

Rhaenyra Targaryen enters the final moments of ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 more powerful than ever, but she also becomes more isolated and ruthless. According to Emma D’Arcy, the death of Helaena Targaryen may be the moment that finally pushes her too far.

Helaena dies in the finale after jumping from a window in the Red Keep. She chooses death rather than remain a prisoner in Rhaenyra’s hands, with her unborn child dying alongside her.

For D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra, Helaena was much more than another casualty of the Targaryen war. Speaking with TheWrap, the actor described her as the moral center of the series.

“Helaena is the moral heart of the show — I think she’s maybe the only character who has a proximity to power that is not compromised by it,” D’Arcy said.

That makes her death especially important for Rhaenyra. D’Arcy believes it closes the door on any chance of repairing Rhaenyra’s relationship with Alicent, Helaena’s mother and Rhaenyra’s former childhood friend.

“I think her death actually condemns Rhaenyra to her chosen path,” D’Arcy said. “In some way I feel that it condemns Rhaenyra to be alone in her pursuit for power.”

Rhaenyra’s transformation has been building throughout the season. The character has become increasingly suspicious of the people around her, while her decisions have become more violent.

One major example is her decision to remove Mysaria from the Red Keep. D’Arcy sees Mysaria as Rhaenyra’s conscience, making the decision to send her away particularly important.

“The point at which you banish your conscience from the castle, you’ve set a much darker course,” D’Arcy explained.

The actor also pointed to Jace’s death as another major reason for Rhaenyra’s change. The loss damaged her ability to empathize with others and pushed her toward a colder view of the world.

By the finale, Rhaenyra is also openly using the Targaryen prophecy to strengthen her claim. She tells the people of King’s Landing about the coming threat of the White Walkers and presents herself as the person destined to lead them.

D’Arcy believes Rhaenyra genuinely believes in the prophecy. In her view, the queen has become increasingly dependent on the idea that she has a divine right to rule.

At the same time, Rhaenyra is becoming less interested in outside institutions that could challenge her authority. Her decision to execute a priest who refuses to support her is another sign of that change.

Showrunner Ryan Condal told TheWrap that Rhaenyra’s journey has always been connected to the question of whether Westeros can accept a woman as its ruler. Season 3 pushes that question to its breaking point.

D’Arcy said the creative team wanted the audience to understand how Rhaenyra reaches this darker place instead of simply labeling her as a villain.

“We wanted to test — possibly to breaking point — an audience’s allegiance and relationship with that character,” D’Arcy said.

Now the fourth and final season will show what happens to this new version of Rhaenyra. D’Arcy admitted they do not know exactly how the story will unfold.

“I know nothing. I mean … I know what we all know, but I know nothing specific about what comes next,” D’Arcy said.

But one thing is clear: Rhaenyra will not enter Season 4 as the same woman fans knew at the beginning of the series.
