The ‘Insidious’ horror franchise created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell has terrified audiences with its haunting realm known as The Further. While the films were released out of sequential order across two decades, following the storyline chronologically provides a clear narrative of psychic Elise Rainier and the Lambert family. Viewing the prequels first allows fans to understand the origins of the supernatural entities before witnessing the hauntings that target Josh and Dalton Lambert. Here is the chronological watch order for the five ‘Insidious’ films to prepare for the upcoming installments.

‘Insidious: Chapter 3’ (2015)

Serving as the earliest narrative entry in the franchise, this prequel takes place a few years before the haunting of the Lambert family. Parapsychologist Elise Rainier reluctantly agrees to use her spiritual abilities to contact the dead on behalf of a teenager named Quinn Brenner. Quinn becomes the target of a malevolent demonic entity known as the Wheezing Demon after attempting to reach her deceased mother. With the help of paranormal investigators Specs and Tucker, Elise enters The Further to battle the demon and protect the young girl.

Picking up shortly after the events of the previous prequel, this installment delves deep into the childhood trauma and family origins of Elise Rainier. Elise receives a distress call from a man living in her former childhood home in Five Keys, New Mexico, forcing her to confront a monster known as KeyFace. Alongside Specs and Tucker, she investigates the supernatural disturbances while reconciling with her estranged brother and discovering long-buried family secrets. The film’s conclusion directly sets up the events of the original ‘Insidious’ as Elise receives a psychic vision of a young boy in danger.

The original entry follows married couple Josh and Renai Lambert as they move into a new home with their three children. Tragedy strikes when their oldest son Dalton falls into an unexplained coma, which medical professionals cannot diagnose or treat. Elise Rainier is called in to assist, revealing that Dalton is an astral projector whose spirit is lost within a dark dimension called The Further. Josh must travel into The Further to rescue his son from a malevolent red-faced demon before evil spirits possess Dalton’s physical body.

‘Insidious: Chapter 2’ (2013)

Picking up immediately where the 2010 film left off, the Lambert family seeks refuge at Josh’s mother’s house while police investigate Elise’s mysterious death. Renai begins noticing unsettling behaviors in Josh, suspecting that the entity possessing him in The Further has crossed over into the physical world. Specs, Tucker, and Elise’s longtime associate Carl investigate the origins of the Bride in Black to uncover the spirit’s true identity as Parker Crane. Josh and Dalton work from opposite sides of the spiritual plane to banish the parasitic ghost and close the psychic doorway once and for all.

Set nine years after the events of ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’, this chapter catches up with the Lambert family as Dalton begins his freshman year at an art college. Both Josh and Dalton have had their memories of The Further repressed, but Dalton’s artistic exercises inadvertently unblock his suppressed psychic memories. As demons from their past resurface to claim them, father and son must delve deeper into The Further than ever before to confront their shared family trauma. The storyline culminates in a final confrontation to seal the red door permanently, bringing closure to the central Lambert family arc.
