Hugh Jackman Recounts the Legend of Robin Hood Ahead of ‘The Death of Robin Hood’ Explosive Release
A new video featuring Hugh Jackman has been released where he talks through the story of Robin Hood ahead of his upcoming film “The Death of Robin Hood.”
The video has been shared as an exclusive promotional piece tied to the movie’s release campaign.
In the video, Jackman revisits the long history of the Robin Hood legend and sets the stage for the darker version that will appear in the new film. The movie is described as a thriller and a new take on the classic 17th-century ballad “Robin Hood’s Death.” It shows a much older Robin Hood dealing with the consequences of his violent past.
“The Death of Robin Hood” is written and directed by Michael Sarnoski. The film stars Hugh Jackman in the lead role, with Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe also appearing in key roles. The story focuses on an aging Robin Hood who is badly injured and forced into a strange situation involving a mysterious woman. While recovering, he is also forced to confront everything he has done in his life as an outlaw.
Jackman plays a version of Robin Hood that is far from the usual heroic image. This character is older, more damaged, and struggling with guilt. Jodie Comer plays Sister Brigid, a character who becomes part of his journey. Bill Skarsgård appears as Little John, reimagined in a darker and more complex way than in traditional versions of the story. Murray Bartlett plays a character known as The Leper, while Noah Jupe plays Arthur, also called Godwyn.
The film was officially announced in 2024, when it was confirmed that Michael Sarnoski would direct and write the project. Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer were attached as the lead actors from the beginning. Shortly after, A24 secured the United States distribution rights for the film. This happened during a competitive deal at the Marché du Film, a major film industry market.
In early 2025, more cast members joined the project, including Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe. Filming began in February 2025 in Northern Ireland. Production took place at Belfast Harbour Studios and several outdoor locations including Silent Valley, Glenarm, and Murlough Bay. Post-production work was done in Holywood, County Down. The filming process wrapped up in late March 2025. The movie was also shot on 35mm film, which gives it a more traditional cinematic look.
The release plan for the film is already set. “The Death of Robin Hood” will premiere at the 73rd Sydney Film Festival on June 12. After that, it will be released in the United States on June 19, by A24. The film is expected to reach theaters worldwide around the same period.
The story is based on a darker interpretation of the Robin Hood legend. Instead of focusing on adventure and heroism, it explores aging, guilt, and survival. Robin Hood is no longer the young outlaw of folklore but a man dealing with the consequences of his past life.
With Hugh Jackman leading the film and Michael Sarnoski directing, the project is being positioned as a serious and emotional take on a well-known story. The promotional video adds early insight into the tone of the film and builds anticipation ahead of its release next year.
