Hugh Jackman recently shared a funny and embarrassing story from his early stage career. The actor revealed that during an Australian production of Beauty and the Beast in the 1990s, he accidentally peed on himself while performing as Gaston.

Speaking on the Dec. 10 episode of The Howard Stern Show, Jackman explained, “As I picked Belle up, a little bit of p** came out.” He was wearing tight red tights at the time and worried the audience might notice. “I thought, ‘Uh-oh,’” he said. “And I remember Belle’s over my shoulder, she goes, ‘What’s going on?’ ‘Cause I’d stopped singing. I was just marching around.”

Jackman recalled reaching a critical moment in the performance. “And then at the end of the song, I had a choice: You sing that F sharp—and I either sing it and pi** my pants, or I don’t sing it and humiliate myself,” he said. Determined to deliver, he chose to sing. “I sang it, and it was just going. It was just going,” he added.

For a while, Jackman thought he had avoided embarrassment. “I looked down and there was nothing. I’m like, ‘I don’t understand, these tights must be like a wet suit or something,’” he said. But other crew members noticed the mishap. “My dresser is in the wings and all she’s doing looking at my crotch,” Jackman said. By the time he left the stage, the accident had become obvious.

Despite the incident, Jackman went on to enjoy a successful stage career, including starring in Broadway productions like The Music Man. Reflecting on the experience, he joked, “Nothing can embarrass you after that.”

This story shows that even world-class performers like Hugh Jackman have moments that don’t go as planned, but how you handle them makes all the difference. It’s also a reminder that humor and professionalism can help turn a potentially humiliating situation into a memorable story.
